Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Alex Cohen. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alex, appreciate you joining us today. Have you ever had an amazing boss, mentor or leader leading you? Can you us a story or anecdote that helps illustrate why this person was such a great leader and the impact they had on you or their team?
The best boss I ever had was a man named Arthur Wood who owned an event company called Art of the Event now in Medford MA. He is an avid music lover himself, when I last worked there in 2015 he had 100+ guitars lining the wall of his office. He was the most understanding boss I ever had in terms of taking my priorities of being a musician into account. He was always encouraging me to continue pursuing music and made accommodations for me to have the time to continue pursuing it while keeping a job, for no other reason than his love for music and his respect for me and what I was doing. I also learned many life skills from him, my favorite being “work smarter, not harder”. As someone who worked probably 12 jobs before that due to never having a boss who understood my passion for music, to now being a fully self employed professional musician, I can say firsthand that the most important thing an aspiring musician can ask for in a job is a boss who loves music and musicians and understands how hard it is to turn into a career.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
Music has been my whole life for as long as I can remember. I’ve been obsessed with it since I was a child and have taken my influences all the way through life with me to now where I am an experienced singer, lyricist and performer. I began playing acoustic solo gigs around the same time I began doing metal vocals in different bands in college back in 2011. I never wanted to be boxed in or pigeon holed so I was always trying to spread my eggs in many baskets. After years of different projects and experiences, Fathom Farewell has been the one that people seem to remember most often and I absolutely love making this music, so I’ll be putting out new Fathom Farewell and all kinds of different music for however long I’m on planet Earth.
What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
The answer to this is very simple. Support! Show up to concerts! Listen to music you enjoy and share it with everyone you think will enjoy it! In today’s climate how many reacts and comments you have on posts means everything, as well as monthly spotify listeners, so listen to your favorite artists on spotify and comment/react on their posts!
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The ability to express ourselves in a genuine way and then share it with the world. The kind words shared with us about our art from our supporters (our family) over the years has been extremely humbling and it will never get old sharing what we’re feeling with the world through music.
