Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Alexander Callaway. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Alexander thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
It all started when I joined high school, I was told as a freshman getting into musicals within the first year is hard and rare, but I was lucky enough to partake in the musical as ensemble which was huge to me because I had no acting experience…only singing in choirs. I have expression and freedom which is what got me through I believe and it helped shine through within the musicals also. After my senior year I knew I had to make this my career…I auditioned for AMDA LA and once I received that acceptance call I just knew this is the journey for me. To finally put in the work it meant that I’m going to open myself up to failures, but after the failures come successes! I’m ready for it all, plus I have many goals to achieve later on. I am happy where I am at right now, I’m not comfortable and being uncomfortable is the best situation in my opinion because it means I still want more and I still want to grow!
Alexander, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My main mission in life is to tell/show people that anyone who may have the same “qualities’ or “appearance qualities” as me can do it. I’m not going to say “the same look” due to the fact that our looks are different in many ways and we don’t deserve to be put in a box. As someone who’s tall, currently on a weight loss journey, who’s pretty flamboyant, but also masculine I can proudly say I stand out. Meaning that if I audition or whatever dance class I take, sometimes I feel like I have to always PROVE myself to show them I can get low as the next person, I’m quick on my feet or I can riff/run also. Currently I’m working on a cruise ship on the Entertainment team and I can say I have fully fixed that mindset, I remembered that it’s my passion to entertain/perform for people and that regardless I will stand out just because of the passion I have. I don’t want people to look at me and say “oh he’s trying to hard” I want people to look at me and say “I can do that too” I want to inspire people and show them that being unapologetically you, you can do whatever you want
My “brand” is ME, I’m energetic, charismatic, and all around creative. There isn’t a task that is “too hard” because I’m here to learn and grow new abilities so I am able to continue working. You have to be adaptable within this industry I’ve noticed and the journey is rough, but I love it so much.
Trying to b build a following as we speak, I would want my audience to feel confident, happy and motivated anytime they see my content, I present my content in a comedic way to break the ice of some things that may be hard for some like weight loss journey, I’m v try real and honest when it comes to it, I just started to make content for it because it will help me stay on track. I’ve tried in the past, but every time I just went backwards, but every closed door opens a new one. I also post content of me performing infant of audiences while at sea, I’m very thankful for the opportunity and I hope it continues to flourish I that way. I don’t consider myself a full time content creator because I am a performer I’m working towards broadway, tv and cinema. The flame will never die within me and it will continue to burn as long as I am able to!
A goal is to gain an agent, I’m a go-getter and very adaptable, like I said as a performer you have to be able to be more than what they thing you can handle or do. The BIGGEST message to my audience is “you can’t put me In a box” I will always strive and fight to be outside of that box because I know I’m more than ‘A and B’ I continue to learn/grow every single day, you can always catch me training at dance studios, continuing my singing lessons and much more to make sure I’m able to show them I am not just a ‘box’ I’m Alex Callaway!
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
While singing I had to unlearn how to be “quiet” when it came to certain songs. It was a struggle for my voice to be comfortable In its pocket for awhile do to choral and barbershop singing I choir. I’m not saying it was ALL bad, because of those lesson I know how to sight read, I’ve received ear training, and I can hold my own part or have harmonies on a lockdown when it comes to it. The negative part from it was that my voice had to be quiet/contained. I always heard how “unique” my voice is which is true because my voice isn’t like everyone else’s, but my voice had to be very piano sometimes because it seemed like my voice was unable to blend with the others. Which maybe looking back I needed to train more to blend, but instead I just keep hearing it’s “too unique” Again I am saying I am very grateful for being in those groups because I did enjoy myself, but I wish at that time I was able to unlock more of my voice and not start trying to bring the capacity of it out while I was In college, but like the saying goes “Everything happens for a reason” and truly now I can say my voice is better than it was back then.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
My goal is to be well rounded within tv, movies, Broadway, music production and creative team within movies. I know it’s a lot to unpack and a VERY big task at hand, but these goals will be succeeded one step at a time of course. I would love to be Genie from Aladdin on broadway, it’s one of my biggest goals that I hope I even get the chance. Just to be on broadway alone or on a touring musical would be a huge reward/blessing in its self. I told myself after college I’m going to find a job that will help open up my eyes to the world and how I can “keep swimming!” The current job I have is being an assistant cruise director on a cruise ship. I’m traveling and making money at the same time while entertaining guests, it’s a great start. How I booked this job: I graduated June of 2023, family took a cruise as a shared graduation gift and my mom says “You should do the Voice of The Ocean” I told her I sang everyday, I want a break from it while on vacation, but she pulled the ‘I’m your mom’ card and I auditioned! Got in…won the voice of the ocean, connected with the company and I received the job! Very blessed I mean who knew a game show on vacation would lead me to scoring a job with the company!
