We recently connected with Alexa Nahas and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Alexa, thanks for joining us today. So let’s jump to your mission – what’s the backstory behind how you developed the mission that drives your brand?
My mission is to help families (working moms specifically) create and curate their family archives to reflect their everyday life so they have accurate and endearing memories to cherish forever.
Growing up I watched my own mother struggle to balance everything as a working mom. She was always great at taking the photos and being behind the camera. However, she couldn’t find the time to do something with them so they just sat in boxes collecting dust. It also felt unfair to me that she was rarely in the photos because she was always the one taking the photos. No parent should be invisible in their own family history and children deserve to grow up with photos that reflect the love that surrounds them. I want to create a living gallery wall in every clients home so they can both enjoy their photos and learn how to create a complete family archive to document the growth of their family.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I am a family and pet photographer based in Philadelphia but I will travel anywhere for babies and pets. (The furthest I have gone so far is Peru!) I was interested in Photography from a young age after my grandfather gifted me my first film camera. I was obsessed with documenting every little thing. I felt like a detective hunting for the perfect little moments to freeze in time. I decided to study Photography at Drexel University with the full intention of becoming a photojournalist/war photographer. However, as the years went on I fell more and more in love with Portraiture. After doing my coop with a wedding and family photographer I knew that I had found the path I wanted to pursue. When I graduated and started my own business I photographed mostly weddings and families until I got my first dog. It was then that I realized I also needed to photograph the furry members of the family as well and become known as the go-to photographer for families that want to include their pets in their photos. While it can sometimes be chaotic I always tell my clients to embrace the chaos and rest assured it’s going better than it feels.
My main focus is now the first 5 years of life from Maternity to running rambunctious kids. My sessions are very go with the flow and I always let the children lead so they can participate and have as much fun as possible. After every session I present images to my clients in my office on a nice big screen during a reveal meeting and then we decide what to do with them together. This way muy clients are never left to figure it all out on their own and leave epty handed. In addition to digital files I offer a selection of curated family heirloom products like prints, wall art, and archival albums. Every product I offer is the most archival version available to ensure quality and longevity.
I am most proud of the feedback I get from my clients about feeling comfortable in front of the camera and enjoying the experience even if they weren’t sure how it was going to go. It is important to me that the experience is just as enjoyable as the final result. I understand feeling uncomfortable in front of the camera so I go out of my way to accommodate my clients and do what is most enjoyable so when you do print your photos each one gives you a warm and fuzzy feeling when you see them around your house.
What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
Word of mouth is my main source of referral so the experience my clients have is really important to me. I treat my clients like family / how I would want to be treated. Families with young kids have a lot going on so I give them as much flexibility as they need, keep open communication so they can use me as a resource if needed, as well as give them the most luxury service I can provide so they don’t have to do any heavy lifting. I incentivize referrals with future session and product discounts depending on how many people are sent my way. I also find that engaging with local small business owners is a great way to naturally network and find the types of clients that are ideal. I have created a few blog posts that are aimed more at informing the local community than selling my service and people love to share it so it naturally brings effective traffic to my site.
How do you keep in touch with clients and foster brand loyalty?
I touch base with all my clients on a monthly basis via email campaigns and social media tagging as well as a yearly check in / gentle nudge email to give them first dibs on my calendar before I book up. I also make sure to send birthday cards to all the kids (loving sent from my pets) to remind them I would love to see how big they have gotten. I find that when I get clients at the beginning of their family growth they prefer to stay with the same person to document as it provides ease and familiarity.
