Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Alexa Murray. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Alexa, thanks for joining us today. Do you think folks should manage their own social media or hire a professional? What do you do?
Social media has been the key to the growth of our nonprofit. I have managed our social media from the beginning and plan on continuing to manage it into the future. Social media allows us to reach a wider pool of donors, volunteers, and supporters. We are able to share our mission and our stories with people all around the world on a daily basis and reach people who truly care about our work.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
I am the co founder and executive director of Friendly Fields Farm, a nonprofit animal sanctuary with a focus on rescuing farm animals from situations of slaughter, neglect, and abuse. In the first two years of running our nonprofit, we have been able to rescue more than 100 animals and provide them vet care, food and water, and a safe home. We also offer educational tours and share our animal’s stories on social media. Our aim is to change the way people think about animals, and advocate for their rights. We are working with our community to create a better world for animals, and people by providing a safe sanctuary space for all beings.
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
The best piece of advice I could give to someone looking to build a social media presence would be to be consistent and original. With almost any kind of social media, consistency is key. Your audience needs to know what kind of content to expect and how often to expect it. If you’re looking to gain followers it needs to be clear to potential followers looking at your account what kind of value you will bring into their lives when they follow you. Be creative and pay attention to what works! If your followers are responding well to a certain type of post, continue to explore that subject in your future posts.
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
Three years ago I was living in New York City. I was working towards building a career as a graphic designer. Unfortunately, I was dealing with a lot of anxiety and depression and I made the very difficult decision to step away from my work, and move back to my hometown in Upstate New York with no plans in place for my immediate future. At the time I was terrified to make such a big change and to face so much uncertainty. Over the next few months I began working on plans for what would eventually become my nonprofit organization, Friendly Fields Farm. Without taking such a big risk and changing my focus, I would never have ended up where I am today.
