We recently connected with Alexa Mellott and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Alexa thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Are you happier as a business owner? Do you sometimes think about what it would be like to just have a regular job?
That’s a tough question but an important one when thinking about the pros and cons of owning your own business. Regardless of your position in a company or career path the grass can always be greener on the other side, I think for myself, being my own boss was always in the cards for me. I thrive in an environment where I can work as much as I would like and make my own schedule to accommodate my lifestyle. That being said it’s a lot of hard work and I can sometimes find myself burnt out or wishing I had paid vacation, bonuses, or maternity leave. If I don’t save for those things myself I don’t get them, and if I worked for a corporation it would likely be included in my job position. In my industry there’s a lot of opportunities to be your own boss if you have a good support team and can handle everything from inventory to taxes. I think when deciding if you wanna be a business owner you have to sort through all the requirements of the job and decide if it’s something you can handle all on your own or if somethings need to be out sourced. For example I wish I had my CPA do my book keeping for my business taxes years before I finally had him take that over, in hindsight my time was better utilized in other areas of my business and instead of asking for help I thought I had to do it all myself. All in all I’m extremely happy being the owner of Alexa’s Luxe Lashes and I’m extremely grateful for my team and my incredible clients that keep me in business!
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Alexa’s Luxe Lashes is Med Spa on South Pearl Street in Denver. We have staff that specialize in everything from facials to Botox and filler as well as hair and lash extensions. As owner I do the custom eyelash and hair extensions. One thing that sets Alexa’s Luxe Lashes apart from other eyelash studios is that we carry over 50 different styles, lengths, color and thickness of lashes so we can completely customize your lash extensions to perfectly fit your personal style. So many salons do one type and one style of lashes, limiting their customer base. We also offer consultations for all of our services from hair extensions to facials or Injectables so clients have the availability to talk to their service provider about what they are looking for in and have realistic expectations going into their service. I’m very proud of the business I’ve built and take a lot of pride in making our clients feel like their best selves.
Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
I think the best way to grow as a business is to start with providing a good service. Your clients will talk about who helps make them feel beautiful with others when they are happy with the outcome. Word of mouth is in my opinion the best way to build clientele, this leads to positive reviews, new clients and fuller books! Personally I have found different demographic of clients also come from different avenues of advertising, you’ll get a younger client base when advertising on social media and an older client base when advertising on Google or places like Next Door. It’s important to know what demographic of clients you’re wanting to get in your door to know where to best utilize your spending if you decide to pay for advertising.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
I didn’t have the most traditional up bringing, and I can attest that the hardships I went though as a young girl shaped my work ethic and personal determination. I was adopted at 13 by a single father after my biological mother got addicted to drugs and abandoned my sister and myself. It would have been more ideal for my sister and I to have been removed from the abusive home much much earlier but that unfortunately is not how my story played out. I learned from a young age that there won’t always be someone there to help you and the only person you can truly rely on is yourself. That’s a hard lesson to learn as a child and I knew nothing was going to be handed to me in life, if I wanted something I had to work hard for it. My adoptive father Keith has an incredible work ethic, he instilled in me much of my drive and determination, teaching me there was no limit to what I could accomplish in life if I put my mind to it. There are no better hands that the 2 you have to build the life you want.
