We were lucky to catch up with Alexa Loch recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alexa, appreciate you joining us today. Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
I guess I can start by saying that most of my pieces have greater meaning. I use a lot of bold colors that help describe my mood or things I go through at the time I paint them. If I’m not using colors, I use the objects I paint to help describe a story more deeply. I say most of my pieces have meaning because there are some that I paint for absolute fun. Lately I’ve been steering into painting animals and insects because I’ve found the biggest inspiration in the circle of life. I’d like to say the more color I use the more I try to describe different feelings. I am aware with the wheel of complimentary colors, but I try not to follow it because life itself can be unexpected.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I got into painting simply because I wanted to create my own world. As every creative, I use art as a way of expressing myself and the wonders of my mind. I went to college to become a graphic designer but at the time, I couldn’t afford classes so I continued painting on my free time and would join local art shows here in Houston Texas. From there, I met a lot of cool people who were interested in not only buying my personal pieces but asking for custom work and some even saying they would get my work tattooed on them. It inspired me to not only practice different mediums but I am now a full-time tattoo artist here in the city. My goal as an artist is to become versatile with all styles, to learn to draw everything and anything in my own way. So far, I have learned to paint with aerosol, acrylic, oil, ink, lead, graphite, and of course pencil. From working on logos for corporate America to tattooing on not-so-corporate America, it is my destiny to create art for myself and the world around me.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
As cliche as it sounds, the most rewarding aspect of being an artist is seeing the satisfaction of every client I work with. Of course, I do have my moments in the tattoo industry where some people just don’t like my style, and I know that it’s okay. I know I won’t be for everyone, but it’s a great feeling when people come to me to bring their ideas to life. I think another rewarding aspect is being referred by someone I’ve worked with to a friend of theirs because they feel I can take on the idea. In the painting industry however, I love the different ideas my clients come up with because usually it’s things I’ve never thought of before. It’s fun to sketch a few potential pieces and choose which one bests fits as a team. All in all, I really enjoy working with people who support me because little do they know, they help inspire me to become better and open my mind to other worlds.
Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative?
I’ve met a lot of people who constantly work from the time they get up to the time they go to sleep. I understand we all have a way of expressing ourselves, some with creativity but some also through health and fitness or simply reading a book. If it’s one thing I will say to someone who is not creative, it’s that everything in this life we chose ourselves. We are the creator of our own reality, and if you ever feel stuck jus know that with even one try, you can change and allow creativity to flow within. Whether it’s learning a new instrument, or writing a poem. It’s always good to express yourself creatively because it helps open up who you are in the inside.
