Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Alexa Daniels. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alexa, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Covid has brought about so many changes – has your business model changed?
We moved the company from my hometown of Anchorage, AK to Boulder, CO at the beginning of 2020 and could have never imagined what was in store for us! We had been used to building our business through samplings, events and community involvement – once the pandemic hit all of this went out the window, our revenues dipped significantly, and we needed to figure out a way to establish ourselves in a new market during the pandemic, or else we wouldn’t be able to keep the company operating. In hindsight, I can see that this was exactly the push we needed to launch into our first retailer and start taking a different approach to scaling the company which has worked even better for us so far!
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
Six years ago I was a college dropout and knew I needed to commit myself to a path which would challenge me to grow. I have always had a passion for health and wellness and at the time, the Keto diet was just becoming popular. I was fascinated by the benefits of this diet and even more so, how it contradicted the “low fat, high carb” diet which I grew up conditioned to believe in. Once I realized we had it all backwards, I knew others would begin to catch on and adopt a high fat, low carb lifestyle. I wanted to get ahead of this trend by providing a product which would satisfy the carb cravings and only use real food, healthy ingredients – which is why our donuts are also plant-based and gluten free. After launching the company in my hometown of Anchorage, AK and seeing how quickly the product caught on – we knew we had something that could scale – and that’s when we decided to move to Colorado.
Every year brings a new challenge that feels bigger than us, but we always make it through to the otherside. I am most proud of our tenacity and constant focus on the big picture vision of what we’re creating. That is what keeps us grounded and able to move through the more difficult times, so we can continue to serve high quality, delicious donuts to our community!
Can you talk to us about manufacturing? How’d you figure it all out? We’d love to hear the story.
We self manufacture all of our products – which was not the original plan! From the beginning, we were determined to find a co-packer who’d manufacture our products for us. After many test runs, meetings, R&D expenses, etc.., we began to realize our product was complex (compared to industry standards) and we didn’t feel like any co-packer would put an adequate amount of care and attention into the process. We even decided to work with one of the co-packers for a couple of months – which just validated our initial gut feeling. We could either simplify our product and manufacturing process, or continue to self-manufacture and maintain our quality standards. Because we put the product first, we decided to commit to self manufacturing.
How’d you meet your business partner?
My cofounder and I met on Tinder! He has many complementary skill sets to mine, so as I was developing our products and starting the business I would call on him to help with branding and the more creative aspects. We decided to officially start the company together and now looking back at all that he’s contributed, I can confidently say I wouldn’t be here without him. I would not generally recommend going into business with your significant other – but do what feels right for you! It will inevitably change your dynamic and can either bring you closer or further apart. We got lucky!
