We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Alex Walls. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Alex below.
Alex, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Are you able to earn a full-time living from your creative work? If so, can you walk us through your journey and how you made it happen?
I have been fortunate enough to earn a full time living from playing music for the last 6 years now. It definitely didn’t happen over night but I started off going to local jams around town and sitting in with bands, just networking and meeting as many people as I could until slowly but surely people started to hire me. I think its good to try to do as many things as possible and the job is always changing which is exciting. One day you’re in the studio playing on a record, some days you’re playing in a bar and sometimes you’re playing in an Arena to 5000 people! I have been able to play music all over the US, Canada and Europe all while making a living do it!
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
My name is Alex Walls I am a full time musician here in Nashville TN. I started playing guitar at the age of 13 in my hometown in Ontario Canada but have called Nashville home since 2017. From the moment I picked up a guitar I knew it was what I wanted to do with my life. I spent countless hours as a teen honing my craft playing and learning as much as possible. It was around this time I started playing in local cover bands and never stopped trying to getting better and learning from others around me. I am most proud of the fact that I had a goal in mind since I was just a teenager and was able to make it a reality no matter what the risk were or how many obstacles I had to face.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
I play music for the same reason today as when I just started to play and thats because I love music. I was never really motivated finically or by any other factor to get into this, I just do it because its the thing in life that makes me the most happy and I can’t imagine doing anything else with my life. I also feel like that should be your motivation for most things in life, just do what makes you happy!
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
For me the most rewarding thing about what I do is getting to perform in front of people, I put a lot of time and hard work into what I do, so to see other people enjoying it is a feeling that never gets old. Another thing is the people I get to meet a long the way, I’ve made some life long friends which I am the most grateful for and have gotten to see a lot of cool places I other wise never would have if I had never gotten in to this.
