Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Alex VanLemmeren. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alex, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Do you take vacations? How do you keep things going – any advice for entrepreneurs who feel like they can’t step away from their business for a short vacation?
I haven’t taken a vacation since opening the storefront location. However, I do try to balance my life by working out in the mornings and getting out into nature whenever I can. I do have a vacation planned for October, right after my wedding season comes to an end. I’m very much looking forward to that!
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is Alex, owner and lead designer of Wild Posies Floral & Plant Boutique located in downtown Loveland, Co. My background in the Fine Arts weirdly led me into floral design. I have a great eye for color and texture so the shift from a paint brush to flower stems was a fun new challenge!
Wild Posies started off with just doing floral design for weddings and larger events. I decided last fall that I wanted to start looking for a storefront location in the downtown area and branch out into my own retail space.
I decided to open a brick & mortar location because I felt our downtown area needed a fun, funky plant and flower shop. Being an artist in the community, I wanted the shop to also showcase locally and nationally made goods. I have a handful of locally artistic goods from pottery to essential oil bath blends. I support many small businesses within the United States that create beautiful products, many which use recycled paper and materials.
At the shop, we are a full service florist ranging from custom arrangements to celebrations of life and weddings. We love plants here and sell a lot of different types of houseplants.
We opened the doors a week before Mother’s Day and it’s been going great so far! I very much enjoy connecting with my customers and creating a peaceful environment for people to shop in.
For anyone wanting to order flowers, you can do so on my website at www.wildposies.com. I do offer local delivery a few days a week right now. For anyone needing happy houseplants and/or artisan gifts, we’re your shop! Swing by and say hello!
If you have multiple revenue streams in your business, would you mind opening up about what those streams are and how they fit together?
Wild Posies has many streams of revenue. First we have the brick & mortar location for retail items, floral arrangements and houseplants. We also are extremely busy during wedding season here in Colorado. I also teach a number of workshops at the brick and mortar location including floral design, holiday wreaths and centerpieces. As the business grows, I’d like to add flower subscriptions and corporate accounts as well.
Do you have any insights you can share related to maintaining high team morale?
I’m relatively new to being a boss with employees. Like any relationship, communication is key. I alway try to lead by example and have a positive attitude when in the shop. If there’s an issue, we sit down and discuss it. I give my team praise and tell them how helpful are they to the shop and business. Right now, we’re a small family but I hope it continues to grow.
