We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Alex Ting. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Alex below.
Alex, appreciate you joining us today. Quality control is a challenge almost every entrepreneur has had to focus on when growing – any advice, stories or insight around how to best ensure quality is maintained as your business scales?
I’m thankful to have a team I trust to help edit my images producing consistent looking results on different projects. Editing images and retouching is often a tricky and subjective task to explain and maintain consistency due to concerns such as if the images are overly edited. Much of the work that I have my team edit are apparel e-commerce catalogue imagery, so the editing for these can be more formulaic with clearly documented guidelines to follow. I feel having very well documented and clear processes in place ensures consistency in quality and is less subjective to individual interpretation.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
My name is Alex Ting. I am a photographer who creates content for numerous brands for e-commerce, lookbooks, social media, and campaigns, with the bulk of my work being e-commerce catalogue imagery.
I feel my earliest memory of how I first became interested in fashion and photography was when I used to flip through and admire the images in my mother’s fashion magazines throughout the 90s. In the early 2010s I revisited this interest and started off by assisting an amazing photographer and learned about the business and the craft, while doing shoots with various teams on my own. Shortly after, I started to work with a few brands on my own and following that I lead an e-commerce catalogue team in-house for a global brand. After spending a few years in-house, with a bit of luck and hard work, I was able to focus on my own again building up my own clients. Years later, here I am today

We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
At the beginning, it was a bit tough breaking into this field, which I am sure is the case for most careers in general. There were definitely moments in the earlier days where I thought about going back to my last career as a 3D Artist, back to what was familiar and comfortable. I had to constantly fight myself to keep on track and persist in my new direction. Being generally more shy and introverted was another obstacle I had to overcome, especially in this line of work where you meet and interact with so many new people daily. At the beginning, I remember getting an upset stomach before a shoot from the stress and anxiety of working with new people and overthinking the photoshoot. Over time, I started to feel more at ease and began to let go of the pressure I was putting on myself, which resulted in finally enjoying the process and craft that I love. I also realized how much I enjoy the opportunity of meeting new creatives all the time and continue collaborating with familiar ones.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
One of the most rewarding aspects for me, as a creative in my field, would have to be the opportunity to work with and meet so many different and talented individuals from different artistic and personal backgrounds. I am inspired by the people I work with on set and often random conversations can lead to fun future projects or discovering new hobbies to obsess over. I love hearing the different stories about how other creatives got here and learning who they are as an individual. It is a very fulfilling feeling to chat with both new and familiar faces all the time and gives me an insight into so many different perspectives on topics big and small, casual and some times even major. These insights has shaped my overall way of looking at things and knowing that there are always other ways to think about or approach things such as perspectives, problems, tasks and life.
