We were lucky to catch up with Alex Springs recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alex, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?
As a child, I’ve always been drawn to music and the way it brings me joy, but I never thought I would pursue it as my career choice. In middle school, my mother told me about a performing arts high school that her friends daughter attended, and thought it would be a great fit for me, since I felt that I never fit in the normal crowds at my local public schools. As soon as I started attending that school, I knew exactly what I was destined to do. From joining choir, to the classical guitar ensemble, and playing the viola in Orchestra, I loved nothing more than I love performing music.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
After graduating high school, I felt like the ball was in my court. I started getting booked as a solo artist in the Los Angeles area, and I felt like it was time for me to take it to the next level. I left Cal State LA and started attending Musicians Institute in Hollywood, California. That’s where I started gaining confidence on performing live and collaborating with people in different projects.
In your view, what can society to do to best support artists, creatives and a thriving creative ecosystem?
Don’t make everything a competition. If you see something or someone that makes you wish you can be doing that, then do so on the down low. You don’t need to let people know every single thing you’re doing. When you’re fully focused on yourself, that’s when you are your best.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
When someone comes up to me and says that my performance inspires them to go out and create music themselves, or that I inspire them to incorporate certain elements in their artwork. At the end of the day, I’m just making music that releases different periods of my life that I’ve been through. If it happens to speak to other people and make them feel like they have a voice, then I know I’m doing my job.
