We recently connected with Alex Shearer and have shared our conversation below.
Alex, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today We’d love to hear the backstory of how you established your own practice.
I felt from a young age that I wanted to start my own practice but getting the courage and education necessary to do so was challenging. I’m grateful I started my practice at a time when young entrepreneurs were being celebrated and that I have an incredible support system that encouraged me to do so.
I didn’t study business in college. I had no clue what it took to start your own business/practice. Thankfully, I had support from my parents, who have started and grown multiple companies throughout their careers, to rely on for advice. Although the project in itself was quite overwhelming, I became dedicated to getting all the necessary qualifications and taking it one step at a time.
If I could go back, I would put more effort into the planning of the business structure. Which is a bit ironic considering I tend to plan every other aspect of my life. Even though I went into this head first, my vision adapted and grew over time. Some of the best advice I have received is – launch fast, adjust later. I’ve repeated this to several other friends, colleagues, and clients who have had an interest in starting their own practice or business. You can sit, plan and tweak endlessly, it may never seem perfect. If you spend too much time worrying about it from the start, you may never actually get to it. Create, launch, and adjust as necessary. Business are constantly getting upgraded no matter how well they are doing. I think this advice is particularly applicable to private practices where your brand is you personally.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I have loved health, wellness and human behavior for as long as I can remember. I became passionate about it from a young age and have been continually educating myself, friends, and family on the importance of health and wellness in all areas of life.
I became a Certified International Health Coach through the Institute for Integrative Nutrition and the International Health Coach Association, and now hold specialization certifications in Nutritional Psychology, Gut Health and Brain Health through various accredited schools.
I received my BA in Psychology from Southern Methodist University and MA in Clinical Psychology from Pepperdine University. I believe that bridging the gap between physical and mental health is an important step in creating a happier and healthier world.
Some of my specialties include:
Mindful nutrition and exercise choices
Behavior changes toward healthier living
Nutrition for mental health
Gut health/gut-brain connection
Building a healthy relationship with food
Maintaining wellness while in and out of routine
One of the biggest issues I see today is a lack of individuality in health and wellness. Every body is different, and what works for you might not work for the next person. I work with my clients to get in touch with their personal needs to create a rewarding lifestyle with lasting physical and mental results. I want to equip you with the self-awareness to make the best decisions for yourself, without overcomplicating things.

If you could go back in time, do you think you would have chosen a different profession or specialty?
I love what I do and feel so fortunate that I get to do what I love every single day. The only thing I would add, and have added to some degree, is a focus on wellness and travel. I love travel and started a travel agency with my family last year. I would love to incorporate more wellness focused travel into my practice.
Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
Social media has been a game changer in growing my practice and has been my biggest client source over the last few years. This is the number one way to market now, in my opinion. Creating a presence on social media that is both professional and personal takes time and energy, but is absolutely worth it.
