We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Alex Seidenberg. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Alex below.
Alex, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Can you talk to us about how you learned to do what you do?
The short answer is research, imitation, and practice. The longer answer is I love being a student and learning about the craft of making garments. There is so much to learn and explore in fashion and menswear and streetwear that I would see something that I was interested in, try to replicate it, and then put my own design twist on it. I think there’s still ways to speed up the learning process because there are so many avenues in fashion, whether it’s graphic design and illustration, sourcing, or sewing – the only way to get better is to practice. I think the most essential skills are having a keen eye for design and understanding why certain pieces work and others might not. The obstacle that we run into is often access, whether that be to manufacturers or fabric stores that we can travel to locally.

Alex, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My name is Alex Seidenberg, I am the Creative Director and Designer at Saint Rascal. Saint Rascal is a clothing and arts brand dually based out of Atlanta and Miami. Saint Rascal was started 2 years with my best friends Max Budowsky and Jared Blinderman. We started designing shirts with a “hyperlocal” ethos that pay homage to the neighborhoods that we love. After two years in the space, we are working on creating garments and collections that are more refined, timeless, and expand beyond graphic shirts. We are incredibly proud of our last collection from the Fall/Winter 2021 collection, and have recently put out a series of handmade, screen printed posters.

Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
I am incredibly process driven, so the goal is to constantly expand and make the process better, and hope that in turn the product will get better. We’ve seen it with our shirts. The most recent collection is our third run of shirts, and the difference in quality of the garments, details, and illustrations are miles better than the first and second batch of shirts. We want to continue that curiosity and exploration into different mediums and keep refining our process.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
Our most recent collection of shirts was released in October of 2021. It was our largest, more expensive purchase as a brand. We wanted to create a really high quality product, so we sourced custom tags, and had our printer sew the tags into the shirts after they were screen printed. As I was organizing the shirts to prepare for sale I realized that every tag sewn into every shirt had a word spelled wrong. We quickly learned how important quality control is.
