We were lucky to catch up with Alex Sandulescu recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alex, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Let’s talk legacy – what sort of legacy do you hope to build?
I hope I will be remembered for my oil paintings and maybe some unique interior designs I have created.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
As a kid I used to build stuff with lego, and draw. I have been drawing all my life. So the only path for me was to study interior design & architecture and for a long period of time that was the only thing I did. A few years ago I also started doing oil paintings because all my life I was drawn to the art world.
As an interior designer I provide full service from creating beautiful ideas for an interior space to managing the construction project.
In both interior design and oil paintings, I think what truly sets me apart is my creativity. I don’t do boring stuff. I like unique ideas, things that you don’t see anywhere else, both for design and my art.
I see it all the time in architecture, the same colors, the same type of marble used, the same cold modern ideas. I don’t like that. Everybody copies ideas from the internet. The majority of interiors in houses look the same.
I am proud of most of my work. A few design projects I did and the majority of my paintings because they tell a story. I rather create less projects but with better quality rather than too many.
I think my potential clients should want to work with me if they want something different and interesting for themselves. Same goes for my oil paintings, they should invest in my art only if they like stories.. If they’re looking for abstract art like the majority of people then I am not for them.

Can you share one of your favorite marketing or sales stories?
Yes, so I am an immigrant, and when I first came to US I was super young, just got out of university, I didn’t know anybody here in US so I had to get a job to pay my rent. The first thing I found was being a valet at a mall parking cars. And all the time we would have all these fancy cars pulling up to us and the customers giving us their phone number. I thought those phone numbers were gold, so I kept them in my phone. And at some point after my design website was done I started texting those people telling them “hey it was nice to meet you, I am an interior designer , if you ever need me … etc” . That’s how I got my first client. Of course I never told them I was a valet, I would tell them we met somewhere, or that I have the wrong phone number. It felt risky and stupid but I did it anyway. Out of hundreds of texts sent I i got one customer. And I designed his whole interior. The project was a masterpiece. I guess I got lucky. But it just shows that you have to spot opportunities where other people don’t see them. For me those phone numbers were gold , for others nothing, but it turned up I was right !

Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
Yes, in my art journey. I have been painting for many years, and I still haven’t sold anything for a good amount of money that would make sense for me to continue on this artistic path. Money is really important, but I don’t paint just for that. I paint, first of all, because I want to say something through my art, and I am willing to paint till I die even if I won’t sell anything, kinda like Van Gogh. So that’s my resilience. But I do hope the universe favors me at some point because the best feeling is when you do see the fruits of your work coming to life.
And the same goes for my Youtube account. I forgot to mention, another passion of mine is to do traveling videos. And I’ve been doing this for a few years, filming , editing but I don’t have many followers. And I wish I as doing better. But I do love it so I just continue to do it ! I am not gonna stop !
