We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Alex Rivera a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alex, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today What’s the kindest thing anyone has ever done for you?
Through out my childhood and adulthood my friends and family have have always done nice things for me, as I did for them. I cant really boil everything down to “one thing” but i can say that my mind was always challenged by them in very positive ways. The kindest thing everyone has in one way or the other, has told me was that “I can become anything, but make sure I am the best at it.”. From there I focused on my interest which were Fine Arts, Illustration, Photography and Cinema.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
For those who may not know who I am, My name is Alex Rivera and I go by “The Bronxer”. While that being my nickname that is also the name of my company that I created back in 2015 ” The Bronxer LLC”. To put it in a nutshell my company is like National Geographic but for The Bronx; I photograph and capture footage of The Bronx all while educating my community and others alike in The Bronx about art history ands the imbedded design and color theory we walk pass each day. I got into doing what I do because I noticed that there was not enough awareness and appreciation towards the beauties of design in our community. Throughout my journey in learning design I decided to design for others, by creating logos and helping smaller businesses present themselves better. Something that sets me apart from others, funny enough is that I want “togetherness” within our communities especially through creatives.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
I honestly think that I am my own “resilient story”. Even though my environment pulled me towards many directions, I still chose what made me the most happiest and not what made me the most money. No one within my circle was pursuing anything creative, so in hindsight I took the opportunity in doing just that.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being a creative for me, is the warm feeling of showing the people that I collaborate with that there are always more ways to express an idea. I do this through logo design, branding, mood boards and most important of all for me, “freedom of expression.
