We recently connected with Alex Perez and have shared our conversation below.
Alex, appreciate you joining us today. Can you talk to us about how you learned to do what you do?
I honestly learned a lot just by researching online or YouTube videos. Yes YouTube ! I learned the basics of photography on there all the way to developing film , scanning , making prints. Everything you want to know is out there. You just gotta search for it.
I wouldn’t have sped up the process! I love the journey. Mistakes are supposed to be made in order to learn. I almost always learn something new after every photo shoot I’ve done. A lot of trial and error.
I think learning the basics are crucial to being a good photographer. If you get that down. Then you can create almost any type of photograph you want. There’s people out there doing slow shutter speed photography. If you do it right then you can make a photo that looks like a painting. It’s pretty cool.
The only obstacle that was always in my way was me. I would catch myself sometimes thinking if I can do this or not. Then when I’m done with a shoot or something I would tell myself “ that wasn’t that bad “. Never doubt yourself.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
Well I was born in Miami Florida. My dad was in the military so we moved almost every other year. While my mom stayed at home taking care of us. Shout out to moms for being the best ! We ended up settling in Florida where me and my brother picked up skateboarding. Me and my friends would travel around florida and skate all the dope spots. That’s when I got into filming. I would film everybody then edit little skate videos. That was at a time we had HI 8 cameras and windows movie maker. Then if you wanted to transfer the video over it had to be to a VHS. Those were the best times. I got into film and video in high school. There was a class called TV productions that I did. That’s when I really fell in love with creating and editing. We did little photography in that class but I never dove into it the way I have now. I actually stopped filming and taking photos for a few years after high school. Till I saw a old friend with a camera. He let me use it for a bit and I fell back in love with it again. Ever since I have been non stop.
I just recently started getting into the business side of it. My first year I would do free shoots just to get a portfolio going. I’m thankful for the ones who trusted me and gave me a shot. By doing that I got some good experience.
I really enjoy taking portraits. I think that’s my specialty but I also do headshots, couple shoots , Family shoots , birthdays , engagements. I would like to get into wedding photography. So hopefully this year I can land a few.
I’d like to think that my work stands out. But I got a long way to go to get where I want to be. I do try to edit my photos in a way that is my style. So I hope people notice that.
I think my proudest moment as a photographer so far was when Mugshot magazine published some of my photos. That was a good feeling.
I’m still building my brand/style. I think I’m headed in the right direction. I’m hoping to expand this year and land some new clients. I’m ready to work so if anyone is interested you can reach me on my website – Visualsbyalex.Squarespace.com
What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?
Honestly word of mouth.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
I think just seeing the end result is always worth it. It’s a good feeling when you get the photo you envisioned.
