We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Alex Myers a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alex, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today The more we talk about good leadership the more we think good leadership practices will spread and so we’d love for you to tell us a story about the best boss you’ve had and what they were like or what they did that was so great?
As far as roofing and roofers are perceived, it is more likely you find a porcupine to cuddle than a well-mannered, moral, and patient roofing boss to follow in the lead of. Bruce Hinkle of Regional Roofing & Construction, mentored me throughout my late teens and all of my twenties in the aspect of business, work in a variety of forms, and leadership techniques. We traveled along the east Coast through heat and hail, working long hours on little sleep, and having fun in the sun when the sun wasn’t having too much fun with us. It’s important to have a figurehead in an area you’d like to move into, and I’m grateful for his ability to move me onto the path I’m on now.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
During the onset of Covid, a couple I am close with decided to spend their time and money wisely, and wanted to remodel the interior of their home. We formed our circle, and got to work. My remodeling experience had always been flipping houses, but that work has more of a time basis, completing projects within a window, deadlines; the work we embarked on was premium, helping my portfolio grow, and even installing a chandelier in a walk-in shower! That kind of work takes a lot of time, and a lot of money, but the clients willing to see their vision through are rewarded.

Can you talk to us about how your funded your business?
Funding a business is a question I still ask myself, that is, how do I get more capital to complete bigger projects, to have more marketing, to hire more employees. The short answer is that I did not have any backers financially, but I did, and do, have many persons that work in finance and law that help explain the process of business and finances, how to move money in a way that benefits your present and future, and how to move on from failures that can hinder growth.

Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
Humanity as a whole, is resilient. We evolve, we make new innovations, we move forward in thought, culture, art, etc. I think a good test of resilience is to overcome self-doubt and self-indulgence to move along the plot you’ve set in your mind for yourself. I have worked in extreme conditions and danger, but those days and moments don’t give the gratification that perseverance does. A moment can be beautiful, magnificent even, but a lifetime to look back on, and see all the corners you didn’t cut, is the product of being resilient.
