We recently connected with Alex McKnight and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Alex, thanks for joining us today. Parents can play a significant role in affecting how our lives and careers turn out – and so we think it’s important to look back and have conversations about what our parents did that affected us positive (or negatively) so that we can learn from the billions of experiences in each generation. What’s something you feel your parents did right that impacted you positively.
My mom always believed in me. One of my earliest memories is telling her at four years old that I wanted to be an astronaut. I loved everything about space (I still do), and instead of dismissing it, she leaned in. She told me I could do it, bought me books on space, and invested in my interests. She didn’t just believe in me, she put real effort behind that belief.
That shapeded everything for me. A lot of people say big dreams out loud but never put in the work to bring them to life. My mom was different. She was a single mother of six boys, worked 16 hours a day, and still found a way to support each of us. Watching her taught me that if you want to achieve anything meaningful, you have to commit your time, energy, and effort. With someone like that behind you, how could you not aim for greatness?

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I’ve spent nearly 15 years in local government, working across 911 operations, emergency services, and public safety leadership. Over the years I became the person people turned to when the stakes were high: budget crises, organizational restructuring, major incidents, or long standing problems that needed a strategic reset. That eventually led me to create Resolute Consulting, where I help public, private, and non profit agencies strengthen leadership, improve operations, and build systems that actually work under pressure.
My work focuses on solving problems that most organizations struggle with: unclear strategy, inefficient processes, underdeveloped teams, and the gap between what leaders expect and what their staff experience day to day. I bring a mix of real world emergency management experience, financial expertise, and organizational leadership to help clients get aligned, simplify complexity, and execute effectively.
What sets me apart is that everything I teach comes from experience, not theory. I’ve managed multi-million dollar budgets, guided departments through crises, and built programs scratch. I understand how government really works, how change impacts people, and how to lead teams through high stress environments.
I’m most proud of helping organizations become stronger, more resilient, and more efficient while building trust with their communities. For anyone learning about my work for the first time, I want them to know this; my goal is always to bring clarity, strategy, and results. I care about helping leaders lead well and helping teams deliver at the highest level.

How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
My reputation was built by doing the work that others overlooked. Early in my career, I made it a point to learn constantly, volunteer for the tough assignments, and take responsibility for the things that needed to get done – not just the things listed on my job description. I focused on doing the small things well, and the leaders noticed. Each time I delivered, they trusted me with bigger challenges.
Over time, that mindset created two things that shaped my career: a wide network of professionals who respected how I worked, and a deep knowledge, experience, and skills that came from stepping into roles others avoided. I didn’t set out to “build a reputation,” but by consistently showing up, taking ownership, and doing high quality work, one grew anyway.

We’d love to hear about how you keep in touch with clients.
I stay connected with clients by genuinely caring about their world and the challenges they face. My approach is simple: listen first, understand their reality, and fight to get them solutions that actually make their work better. I don’t focus on what’s easiest for me, I focus on what will help them succeed.
When clients see that I am invested in their goals, not just the project at hand, trust builds naturally. I check in regularly share updates, and make sure they feel supported long after the formal work is done. Tat commitment to relationships is what creates long term loyalty.
