We recently connected with Alex Lang and have shared our conversation below.
Alex, appreciate you joining us today. What do you think it takes to be successful?
The term “success” I believe can be a broad term. It can change and shift through different seasons of life. A combination of ethical values, strong work ethic, and maintaining my passion. As an entrepreneur/photographer always having you vision of what is important will steer you towards success.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Hi! I’m Alex. I am a Michigan photographer based out of Evart, MI. I focus on maternity, newborns, families, and intimate weddings. In my tiny town of around 2,000 people I have a photography studio that I have been able to offer to my clients for the past year and a half. I focus on motherhood, families, and intimate weddings. I bought my first camera at the end of 2018. With the random thought in my head to start documenting my one year old boy, I purchased a $200 rebel t6. At the time I was 25 working as a dental assistant and I started growing fonder of documenting through my lens. I soon gave myself the challenge to learn something new about photography each day. No matter how simple or complex it was. Fast forward a short while, I propelled myself into offering services for other people and it quickly took off. Less than a year later, I left my job as a dental assistant and went full force with photography. I pretty much had the mindset of “it’s either sink or swim”. It was my dream to be making a living from a creative space, and ultimately having much more time with my son. Through self teaching, a few in person and online workshops I am now into my 4th year of business. I try to preach to others, that if you have a dream inside your head you can truly make that your reality. I had no background in business, no silver plater to take from, and no backup plan.
Quickly jumping into the business like I did, definitely led to some trial and errors. It took me a long time to figure out what I truly loved to capture and what I wanted to narrow it down too. Through years of kind of “shooting it all”, I have now focused more on what my heart truly loves. That’s motherhood and families. My biggest inspirations are my two sons, Dawson and Dalton. Motherhood was my saving grace. I want to freeze and capture every second with my children. And I want to do that for others.
I am so proud of the business I have curated over these few short years, but I am even more proud of the images I deliver for families to have forever.
What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
One of the biggest strategies for me has been to post what I want to attract, as far as my ideal client. Determining what I wanted to niche down in has brought me in exactly what I want to be photographing.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
One lesson I had to unlearn as a business owner is to set healthy boundaries. Knowing it’s ok to set business hours for myself. Especially being a mother, this has been key. When I communicate with my clients I am very clear on how the process will all go, therefore my clients are nothing but respectful pre and post photo session.
