We were lucky to catch up with Alex Lambert recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alex, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Learning the craft is often a unique journey from every creative – we’d love to hear about your journey and if knowing what you know now, you would have done anything differently to speed up the learning process.
I started playing guitar and singing when I was a little boy around 7 or 8 years old. My grand-dad was a country music singer/songwriter and was a huge influence on my early life. He’d show me chords to a song and then give me homework to learn the song all the way through so I could play it for the family. When I got into my teens I began using tabs online to learn new songs/riffs. I thought I was gonna be the next Stevie Ray Vaughan until I started getting girlfriends and writing love songs. Suddenly writing and singing became a much more important aspect of music to me. I went a long while as a self taught singer, but once I moved to Los Angeles it wasn’t long before I was taking vocal lesson with an amazing coach named Mark Renk. Mark taught me to have more control & finesse with my singing and I got a ton of amazing guidance while writing/recording 5 days a week in the studio as a recording artist with 19 entertainment. Looking back I could have learned a lot quicker if I had a better ability to focus. Having a daily mindful practice in those days would have helped me tremendously to stay grounded and focused. Also I was smoking way too much weed. This is the foundation of my musical journey, but I’ve picked up a lot of amazing nuggets of knowledge along the way from folks and have always tried to keep a beginners mind about this thing.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I got into the music business when I moved to California in 2010 to be on a few different reality shows. I was recording music to get a record deal, but didn’t end up landing one so instead starting writing for other artists to make a living. I got my first songwriting placement in 2012 and from there wrote songs for artists like Justin Bieber, Carly Rae Jepsen. I took a long break from the music biz & ran a real estate investing company for about 5 years but recently moved to Nashville, TN to pursue this music thing again. Currently I’m working on my debut EP, performing around town and writing tunes like a mad man hoping to land a publishing deal.
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
In 2015 I moved back to Texas from California and had the longing urge to make some money. My music career was slowing down and California wasn’t getting any more affordable. I started flipping houses and acquired some rental properties and learned a lot about running a real business. I am doing my best to apply some of the same principles to music. Sure is a whole different beast though.
Are there any books, videos, essays or other resources that have significantly impacted your management and entrepreneurial thinking and philosophy?
I was extremely inspired by the books 4 hour workweek by Tim Ferris & Rich Dad Poor Dad by Robert Kiyosaki. I have read many similar books since these but, these two really helped shift my mindset at an early age to work smarter and invest.
