Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Alex Koch. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Alex thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Let’s start with what makes profitability in your industry a challenge – what would you say is the biggest challenge?
One of the biggest hurdles in running a profitable recording studio is managing overhead costs while dealing with fluctuating income. Maintaining high-end equipment, keeping up with software updates, and covering rent and utilities all add up—meanwhile, client demand can be unpredictable.
When I first started Digital Dust Studio in my living room, overhead was minimal. But as the business grew, so did the expenses: a larger space, more gear, and increased maintenance costs. A few weeks ago, my tape delay pedal broke down, and I reached out to Fulltone, only to find out they no longer offer support for that unit. I had to track down a specialist who could repair it, and the cost wasn’t cheap. Situations like this are all too common, especially when working with vintage gear.
Even now, with a fully equipped studio, the challenge remains: securing consistent work to cover expenses while competing with the growing trend of home recording. A major issue is last-minute cancellations or clients expecting rates that don’t reflect the true cost of running a professional space. More than once, I’ve reserved time for a client—turning away other potential sessions—only to have them cancel or try to negotiate half the rate. It’s a constant balancing act between maintaining the studio’s value and ensuring steady business.
The industry is shifting, with many musicians opting to record at home rather than invest in studio time. Adapting has been key. Offering hybrid services like mixing, mastering, and remote production has helped keep the studio viable while catering to the evolving needs of artists.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
About Digital Dust Studio & My Journey in Music Production
My name is Alex Koch, and I’m the founder of Digital Dust Studio, a recording and production space that’s been built from the ground up with a focus on creativity, high-quality sound, and artist-driven production. My journey into the world of music production and audio engineering started long before I ever had a proper studio—it began in my living room back in 2013, fueled by a deep love for music and the belief that every artist deserves a space to fully realize their sound.
What started as a small setup in Koreatown, Los Angeles, has since evolved into a full-fledged production suite in Van Nuys, CA. Over the years, I’ve invested in a range of analog gear, instruments, and a newly built isolation/vocal room, ensuring that the studio provides both the sonic character of vintage recording techniques and the precision of modern digital workflows.
What Digital Dust Studio Offers
At Digital Dust Studio, we provide recording, mixing, mastering, and production services tailored to artists, bands, and independent creators. Whether it’s tracking live instruments, producing full songs from scratch, or refining a mix to industry standards, the goal is always to bring out the best in an artist’s vision.
Beyond traditional studio sessions, I also offer remote mixing, mastering, and production—adapting to the industry shift where many musicians are now recording at home but still need professional-quality finishing. Additionally, I work with clients on sound design and post-production for film, TV, and other media projects.
Problems We Solve for Artists & Clients
One of the biggest challenges musicians face today is bridging the gap between inspiration and a polished, professional product. Many artists record at home but struggle to achieve the warmth, depth, and clarity that come from a properly treated space, high-end gear, and experienced engineering. That’s where Digital Dust Studio comes in—helping artists take their raw ideas and shape them into finished, release-ready tracks.
I also understand that working in a professional studio can sometimes feel intimidating or transactional. My goal has always been to create a space where artists feel comfortable, inspired, and supported throughout the creative process.
What Sets Digital Dust Studio Apart
1. A Hybrid of Analog and Digital – The studio is equipped with high-quality outboard gear, vintage preamps, and tape-based effects alongside the latest digital tools. This allows for a rich, dynamic sound that blends classic recording techniques with modern flexibility.
2. Artist-Centric Approach – I’m a musician and producer first, so I know how important it is to feel understood in a studio environment. Whether it’s helping refine an artist’s sound or collaborating on production ideas, the focus is always on the artist’s vision.
3. Flexible & Adaptive Services – The industry is shifting, and I’ve adapted with it. From remote mixing/mastering to hybrid studio sessions, I offer a range of services that cater to today’s independent artists.
4. Experience in Multiple Genres – I’ve worked with artists across a wide spectrum of styles, from rock, indie, and folk to hip-hop, electronic, and experimental music. Each project is approached with a fresh perspective to bring out the best in the music.
What I’m Most Proud Of
Building Digital Dust Studio from the ground up has been one of my biggest accomplishments. Seeing artists return, hearing projects come to life, and being part of someone’s creative journey is incredibly rewarding. I’m also proud of how the studio has grown—not just in terms of gear and space but in its reputation as a place where artists can create without limitations.
Another point of pride is my ability to adapt and evolve with the industry. Whether it’s troubleshooting vintage gear, upgrading workflows to stay competitive, or expanding my services to reach artists beyond LA, I’m always looking for ways to improve and innovate.
What I Want People to Know
For artists, producers, and creatives looking for a studio that prioritizes quality, vibe, and collaboration, Digital Dust Studio is here for you. Whether you’re looking for a place to track a full project, get a mix that translates across all platforms, or refine a production with professional ears, I’d love to be part of your process.
If you’re interested in working together or just want to check out the studio, feel free to reach out.
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
When it comes to sound design and mixing, I don’t just stop when something sounds good—I stop when it feels complete. That’s one of the reasons my clients call me the Sound Detective. I have an ear for details that others might miss, and I’m always searching for those final, subtle elements that take a song from “good” to truly finished.
Often, I’ll finish a session with an artist, save the version they love, and then spend extra time chasing down the small but powerful details—whether it’s fine-tuning mix automation, adjusting FX placement, or sculpting frequencies to make every sound sit exactly where it belongs. But what really sets my process apart is the way I blend organic sounds with creative processing to add depth and uniqueness.
At Digital Dust Studio, I’ve built up a collection of instruments—like my lap steel guitar, charango, autoharp, and other unique textures—that I’ll often experiment with, running them through outboard gear, amps, tape delays, and in-the-box processing to create layers of sound design that subtly enhance a track without overpowering it. Sometimes, it’s about adding an ambient bed from a processed acoustic instrument; other times, it’s shaping an effect that evolves throughout the mix, bringing a track to life in unexpected ways.
This dedication to listening beyond the obvious, experimenting with intention, and uncovering those hidden sonic details has shaped my reputation. My clients trust that when they work with me, they’re getting more than just a mix or production—they’re getting someone who will dig deeper, uncover new sonic possibilities, and bring their vision to life in ways they didn’t even know were possible.
What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?
Most of my clients come through word-of-mouth referrals and repeat business. Artists and producers I’ve worked with trust me to bring something extra to their music, and that reputation keeps people coming back. Running sessions at Digital Dust Studio has also been a huge source of new work—once an artist experiences my process and hears the attention to detail, they often want to collaborate again or recommend me to others. Beyond that, my ability to blend live instrumentation with creative sound design and effects processing has helped attract artists looking for something unique.
In addition to referrals and studio collaborations, I also work with a manager now, which has opened up opportunities to connect with new artists and expand my reach. Social media and features like my Voyage LA interview have also helped showcase my approach and bring in clients who resonate with my style. Even when I’m not actively promoting, sharing behind-the-scenes moments and unique sounds from my sessions keeps my work in front of the right people.
