We recently connected with Alex Kirkland and have shared our conversation below.

Alex, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Do you wish you had started sooner?

I had no idea I was going to be a writer. Throughout most of my life I have had a vast imagination. I would daydream up scenarios and create small stories in my head. I liked telling stories, but never did anything about it until after I worked on the hemp farm. So yes, long story short, I wish I would have started earlier.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?

When I got back from a year abroad in Australia, I was broke and I needed a job. I was lucky enough to have a friend in Colorado who was working on hemp farm and I asked him if there were any open spots. He got back to me a week later saying that there was.

After my tenure on the hemp farm and in the hemp industry, I knew I had a story to tell. There were too many crazy things that happened to me in a short two and half year stint; I had to talk about it. So I put pen to paper and after a year of writing, “Wolves of Hemp Street” was complete.

Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?

I would say the two biggest goals that are driving me forward in my creative life are the stories I still want to tell and the help or inspiration they my have on others.

Have any books or other resources had a big impact on you?

There are several books that have absolutely helped me along my way. Knowing that I was writing a memoir, two of my aunts bought me a book that would help with my self-publishing and writing journey. The first was “Published” by Chandler Bolt and the second was “On Writing” by Stephen King. For future endeavors and inspiration, “Shantaram” by Gregory David Roberts, is a very well written novel and immersive experience.
