We recently connected with Alex James and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Alex thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Do you think your parents have had a meaningful impact on you and your journey?
Most importantly my parents support my career as an Artist unconditionally, regardless of how much or little success I am having. As long as I am happy doing what I’m doing they will support me. When I was young my parents encouraged me to practice and play my guitar. I remember a time when I was 11 years old when I got home from school and did not want to practice my guitar. My dad came to me and said he didn’t care if I mindlessly strummed my guitar for the entire 30 minutes, but I was gonna pick up my guitar and practice. That has stuck with me to this day that if my parents had just let me take that day off I wouldn’t take music as seriously as I do today. My parents always came to my shows when I was in high school. Even if they were the only ones there and even if the music wasn’t good. They still try to come to my shows as much as they can even though I’m 1,000 miles away. My dad took an interest in my early years, changing my strings, setting up my guitar, and finding the best gear I could use so I could perform to the best of my ability. My mom worked extremely hard every day so we could afford the equipment I still use to this day. Together, my parents are a team that never stopped supporting me and is one of the biggest reasons I get up every day to work on my music.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I am Alex James, A rock artist in the Nashville area. I am currently getting ready to release my second single Dirty Minded on November 17th. I am set apart from the rest by how driven I am as an individual to make my dream a reality by becoming a truly successful artist who can live off the music I create. When I want something to happen I will make it happen no matter how difficult it is to achieve. I once played a three-hour set missing half of my band because I wasn’t going to cancel a show on short notice. Any setbacks I have faced such as double bookings at venues or delays regarding my album release have never bothered me because the reality is they are just temporary and if I want my dream to come true and I out work everyone else in the industry I will be successful.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist is knowing that what you create touches others. Whether it’s to feel a certain emotion or just to make someone’s day a little better means the absolute world to me. I would be happy not making a dime in this industry as long as I knew that I made someone’s day with my music, or I inspired someone to pick up a guitar and start playing, or even if my music just helps someone get out of bed in the morning that is what making music means for me.

Are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
The biggest resource that can apply to any field or industry is the people you surround yourself with. If you want to take a leap into something new make sure to have people around you that are going to be supportive, but also critical. Don’t focus on the people who are gonna tell you that what you are doing is great no matter what, but also don’t focus on those who are gonna drag you down all the time. Find people who will help you when you’re down and humble you when you’re up. Secondly, if you want to get better at something find people who are doing the same thing and having the same problems. There is only so much you can learn from people who have already succeeded because their situation isn’t your own. Music isn’t a competition when you are off the stage. Learn from your peer’s successes and mistakes if you want to truly improve.
