We were lucky to catch up with Alex Hughes recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alex, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Can you talk to us about how you learned to do what you do?
If I could go back in time, I’d encourage myself to keep making things and experimenting. It really is the best way to learn—not just to learn new techniques but to develop your artistic style and voice. Artistic skills are important, but they can be learned. For me, the most important skill to develop is the act of practicing and creating regularly.

Alex, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I am a graphic designer from Dallas and I have been creating block prints through my business, Wandering Paper Co. since 2015. I love to travel, and I began by making prints inspired by my trips. I’d seen lots of travel-inspired watercolors and painting, but not many block prints. I was drawn to the graphic nature of block printing and enjoy the challenge of simplifying complex scenes into just a few layers of color.
Over time, I realized that people connected with my prints because they were reminded of important experiences in their own lives, whether that was a special trip, study abroad, or a place they’d lived. People were collecting them to represent their stories, whether places they’d lived or places they’d visited. I love when a piece of mine connects with someone else and enables them to display a small part of their story.

Are there any books, videos or other content that you feel have meaningfully impacted your thinking?
There are a few! I love The Artist’s Way—it completely changed how I think about my creative life. Good to Great by Jim Collins is a classic, and helped me figure out what to prioritize in my business.
Atomic Habits talks about the importance of building small, sustainable habits that accumulate into big results over time. It’s great advice for business, creativity, and in life. I re-read it occasionally because it’s just that good.

Are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
I love Skillshare! You can learn anything on there, from different creative techniques, software, even business skills like bookkeeping and accounting. It’s been so helpful for me.
