We recently connected with Alex (Henax) Lopez and have shared our conversation below.
Alex (Henax), thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?
I would say that all of my projects have meaning in my life because they were all relevant to me in a season of my life that was filled with turmoil, pain, loss, and regret. However, I am excited about my upcoming EP/Album called Haus. As the name suggests, it is going to be way “housier” than my other projects as well as incorporating new elements with old ones. I can finally say that this EP/Album is going to be what I originally wanted to write when I first started composition at 14.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
So, my art started back when I was in high school. I think I was 14 when I started, and it was basically because I had a band teacher who told me that I could not play a part the way I wanted. So, I basically told myself well, fine I will write something so I can play it any way I want. My art is about enjoying the idea of sounds and frequencies rather than lyrics. I don’t really enjoy the ideas of lyrics because people lie, and I do not like people lying, nor do I want to say something in my music that is an eternal lie. I want everything I make to be truthful. I am most proud and excited just about releasing my music. That’s all I ever wanted to do learn how to make music, learn how to make it marketable, and put it out. Simple as that. Professionally, I still feel amateur, and I don’t think I will ever be professional just because I am always learning and always want to be better than I was yesterday. I think I got here today because of stubbornness and not listening to the voices and setbacks. Perseverance. I would say relatively it’s not easy, but it’s like anything that seems impossible. It’s only impossible if you try to take a massive bite in a short amount of time rather than multiple small bites over a long period of time. Nothing is easy, just more manageable with more time. The lessons I learned along the way are to keep going no matter what others say, always learn and never think you know everything, and put your art out even if it’s not perfect because art is meant to be enjoyed, not hoarded. I want the world to know that it’s okay to be good at more than one thing and that I am a testament to those who keep going. Also, if you get the chance, listen to the music and see how it may or may not apply to your life because all I wanna do with anything I do in my job or music is help people.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
The biggest lesson I had to relearn was that I was never at my peak. In this, I mean that I am always willing to learn and should be ready for the next big “thing” by promoting myself in a manner capable of changing. I always told people that I was willing to learn, but to put it into practice with something so personal and raw, like my music and art, is challenging because I interpreted it as getting in the way of my vision. Now I see criticism or an idea from someone as something I should learn to reach the pinnacle of my art for people to understand better.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
The mission that drives my creative journey is my ability to express myself in front of people and heal from prior wounds. I think that if I can share something through music with someone who has worse or similar problems than I then, maybe I can help them. My mission is to help as many people as possible before the final rest, and I believe that God wants me to use the talent He provided me as a bridge to do that.
