We recently connected with Alex Gil and have shared our conversation below.
Alex, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. We’d love to hear the backstory behind a risk you’ve taken – whether big or small, walk us through what it was like and how it ultimately turned out.
In life, I have always wondered if following your dreams is actually possible. The world around us makes it seem like you need to have a boring 9-5 job for the rest of your life just to live in comfort. Yes, I know we all live in certain circumstances where if we don’t work, no matter what it is, we won’t be able to survive, and trust me, I’ve been there too. But what I’m trying to say is that a lot of people are stuck in their “comfortable world” because they are scared to step out of their comfort zone and take risks. The phrase “High Risk, High Reward” has always resonated with me because life involves taking chances in almost anything. If you want to pursue something for yourself, you have to be willing to take that risk. You have to believe in yourself, even if nobody else does.
In my journey, I established my creative media company during high school, yet this narrative truly takes shape in college. The pinnacle of risk-taking in my company unfolded during my college years. Upon entering college, I recognized the immense influence of social media as a modern marketing tool. Proficiency in this realm was the key to gaining recognition. I conceived the idea of offering random photoshoots to strangers and sharing the results online. Initially, few believed in the viability of this concept, but I stuck to it.
The predicament I faced was that this idea did not cover my essential expenses. Balancing financial concerns alongside my college education and building my image was challenging. However, I persisted, unwavering in my belief that I could make it work, and I placed a bet on myself. Although I had savings accumulated prior to college, I was reluctant to deplete them, as I aimed to secure a financial foundation for the future. Still, I decided to tap into those savings to acquire better equipment, and pay for the bills I needed to, so I could put 110% into my dream.
Three months into this journey, my videos were not performing as anticipated, and the financial pressure was pushing me towards giving up. Yet, in the fourth month, unexpectedly, one of my videos went viral overnight. People in my area began to take notice, exploring the amount of work I had done and expressing their admiration. This sudden recognition led to bookings, and the propelling growth of my business.
This journey was marked by risk-taking, as I knew that success demanded my full commitment. I persevered, resolute in my determination to turn my dream into my future.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I am Alex Gil, the founder of Alex Films, a versatile media company that specializes in a wide spectrum of media services, encompassing events such as concerts, portraits, sports, real estate, and more. However, the beginning of my journey can be traced back to my concept of giving strangers free photoshoots.
For those unfamiliar with this concept, these impromptu photoshoots entail me approaching random strangers and asking if they would be willing to do a spontaneous photoshoot on the spot. This idea stemmed from my desire to connect among individuals who might otherwise never have met. Bringing in the idea of connecting more people together and sharing people’s stories while encompassing my passion for photography.
What I want potential people to know about me is that creativity is something I admire, I love thinking outside the box and doing things that people may have never done. Creativity is the pinnacle of everything in life as this is what brings new ideas into the world and I love to add new ideas for people to appreciate.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
I believe that in life, there are no lessons that need to be unlearned. Every experience, whether positive or negative, imparts valuable lessons that contribute to our personal growth and wisdom. We continuously accumulate knowledge from each situation, which is an essential aspect of our life’s journey.
The concept of unlearning suggests that there are certain things we must forget or discard, but I see it differently. Instead of unlearning, we should focus on extracting the valuable insights and wisdom from our experiences. Every challenge, every triumph, and every setback provides an opportunity to gain knowledge and perspective. These lessons shape who we are and guide us towards making better choices in the future.
So, in essence, there are no lessons to unlearn, only valuable lessons to glean from our life’s experiences. The key is to embrace every experience, good or bad, and use it as a stepping stone towards personal growth and self-improvement.
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
This, right here, is what initiated my career. My entire social media series not only marketed my business but also garnered the recognition necessary for its successfulness. Social media stands as the new age marketing tool, with fewer people watching TV and an increasing number turning to their smartphones to consume content. In fact, even commercials are now being filmed in vertical format to cater to social media platforms. Therefore, I recommend that anyone aiming to expand their social media audience should take their ideas and bring them to fruition, regardless of how daunting or seemingly impossible the task may be. There is nothing more regrettable than not pursuing something and being left wondering about the potential outcome. My advice for social media growth is to simply start posting, and your ideas will naturally evolve.
