Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Alex Fatemi. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alex, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. We’d love to hear about when you first realized that you wanted to pursue a creative path professionally.
I have been drawing pictures for as long as I can remember. In elementary school, I was always drawing pictures at someone’s request; their favorite Sega game character (Sonic, Mortal Kombat, etc), or a portrait of a family member. Then in fifth grade, I remember getting twenty dollars to draw all 101 original Pokemon on a poster-sized paper. That was when I realized I could make money from art.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is Alex Fatemi. I have been making art in the San Francisco Bay Area for around 18 years. I consider myself a multimedia artist. Throughout the years, I have created illustrations, painted murals, made collages, taught art and skateboarding, and designed graphics on clothing and skateboards. Now, I also produce videos and content for other artists and businesses.
The practices I enjoy most are creating illustrations, painting, collaging, and working on videos.
I just gravitated towards these areas where I can meet other like-minded creative people. Living in the Bay Area has a rich art scene. Checking out art & music shows, and skateboarding events are great ways to find people with similar interests. I also studied at California College of the Arts. College is another place to meet like-minded people, but I don’t think art school is for everyone.
I’m just really hyped to keep pushing myself to create different types of bodies of work, be consistent, learn new tools, and, meet more creative people, and just show up.
Alright – so here’s a fun one. What do you think about NFTs?
Well, it depends on how NFTs are used because this is a new technology, a new way of presenting and collecting not just artwork, but transactions in general. In that regard, the NFT Art world is small compared to the traditional/contemporary fine art, but it is growing and becoming less taboo. There just needs to be more inclusive, accessible and easy ways to educate people about this in an interesting way; like with more emphasis on why a person would even need or want an NFT, why a wallet, why hold cryptocurrency, and what is the use when I could just buy a physical version of someone’s work? These are important questions.
Most people outside of the tech world associate art on NFT platforms with AI-generated art in the broad sense and outside of the tech world Ai made artwork is not respected at all. This is generally not what NFTs are. There are so many different artists putting their work ‘on-chain’. Actual painters, photographers, and 3d artists are all paving the way and creating new scenes for artists to come together for.
I also think it is fascinating that art in general is at the forefront of how this tech is used. Converting artwork onto a digital format and then it becomes ‘on-chain’ forever. That is cool and has potential for so many other uses with supporting artists, spaces, collecting, and organizing ‘in real life’ events for people to come together and build new art communities. The tech is there, the events are happening in small pockets all around the world, but we are still so early. I think it would be good if we could find a balance between the traditional art world and the NFT art world. Anything is possible, this is the future and the future is now.
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
Just be true to yourself! In all honesty, the most important thing is to focus more on perfecting your craft/art off the screen. Don’t do anything for the likes or followers. Sharing a little bit of your process helps, but don’t give everything away. Stay consistent with what you do and share what you love to do well. That will always inspire people.
Also, get out there, get outside, attend events, create events, meet people, build your community, and/or join one. Being present physically in real life is just as important and also healthy. It is not all about the screen.
