Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Alex Embry. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alex, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today What’s the backstory behind how you came up with the idea for your business?
That’s a great question. I’ve had a really crazy life, I was born and raised in a cult, in a world where love was something I had to earn, something external that could be given or taken away. I spent my early life searching for it, desperate to find that feeling of wholeness, of belonging. And then, one day, I found mushrooms.
The first time I experienced them, something shifted. For the first time, I felt love—not from an outside source, not because I had done something to deserve it, but because it was inside me all along. It was a love that existed simply because I existed. That realization cracked everything open. Mushrooms were my gateway to spirituality, to understanding that there was something bigger than me, that I was a part of something vast and connected. They didn’t just give me answers—they made me start asking better questions.
When mushrooms became legal in Colorado it was natural for me to start to grow them. Then as I went deeper into this journey, I found that growing mushrooms wasn’t just about cultivation; it was about care, about intention. The love I put into them mattered. People told me there was something different about my mushrooms, something they couldn’t quite explain. That’s when I knew I was on to something real. This wasn’t just about growing a product; it was about growing connection.
That’s what excites me the most—using Mush Love as a way to help people connect. To themselves, to each other, to the Universe. Mycelium is nature’s perfect example of interconnectedness, and I want to bring that lesson into the world. This isn’t just a business; it’s a movement. One rooted in love, in understanding, in the simple but radical idea that we are all already whole—we just need to remember it.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I’m Alex, the founder of Mush Love. My journey to mushroom cultivation wasn’t a traditional one—I’ve done a lot of different things over the years, but mushrooms found me when I needed them the most. As I mentioned before, they were my first real glimpse into an inside love I didn’t know existed. They helped me understand that healing and connection weren’t things I had to search for outside of myself—they were already there, waiting to be rediscovered.
Before mushrooms, I was struggling. PTSD, debilitating anxiety, depression, and physical issues that stemmed from the difficult life I had lived. Mushrooms didn’t erase that pain overnight, but they gave me the tools to start the real work of healing. They helped rewire my brain, reconnect me to myself, and ultimately, they gave me my life back.
That’s why I started Mush Love—not just to grow mushrooms, but to help others find their own path to healing and connection. We’re not just cultivating mushrooms; we’re cultivating transformation. Every day, I see people rediscover themselves through this work. I’ve had clients whose parents have reversed Alzheimer’s symptoms, people who have worked with their doctors to transition off depression medications, and so many others who have found relief from PTSD, anxiety, and chronic pain.
What sets Mush Love apart is the heart behind it. People tell me there’s something different about our mushrooms, and I believe that’s because of the love and intention that goes into every step of our process. This isn’t just a business—it’s a mission to help people reconnect to themselves, to each other, and to the world in a deeper, more meaningful way.
That’s what I’m most proud of. Seeing lives change. Seeing people step into their own healing, their own power. And knowing that, together, we’re building something bigger—a world where love and connection grow, just like the mycelium we love to cultivate.

How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
Our reputation has been built on one core principle: love in every detail.
From the way we cultivate our mushrooms to the ingredients we source, everything we do is infused with care, intention, and integrity. We play our mushrooms music, read them testimonials, and even bless the water we use—because we believe that love and energy matter. Our mushrooms aren’t just grown; they’re nurtured.
That same level of care extends to the partners we choose. For example, our chocolate vendor, Bibamba, is one of the few companies that refuses to use child labor in their chocolate production. It costs more, but to us, ethical sourcing is non-negotiable. Every part of our products reflects the values we hold dear.
Beyond our attention to detail, we’re constantly pushing boundaries. We cultivate over 100 strains of Psilocybe cubensis and have expanded into growing rarer species like Ochraceocenctrata and Subtropicalis, with even more in development. We believe in offering variety, not just for the sake of novelty, but because each strain carries its own unique energy, experience, and healing potential.
We’re also expanding beyond mushrooms, bringing DMT into our offerings. This medicine allows people to reach deep inner parts of themselves in a fast, intense way. While the experience is brief, it can be profound—helping users feel euphoria, warmth, deep connectedness to nature, and at higher doses, experiences like ego death and communication with spirit.
At Mush Love, we aren’t just growing fungi—we’re cultivating experiences, transformation, and a deeper sense of connection. That’s what sets us apart.

Have any books or other resources had a big impact on you?
The biggest game-changer for me hasn’t been a book or a video—it’s been a person. My business manager, Leslie (KizenLife.com), has had the most profound impact on my entrepreneurial journey.
We started out as friends, but it didn’t take long for me to realize that her wisdom and guidance were exactly what I needed. She talks a lot about alignment—the idea that what’s meant for you can’t miss you—and that perspective has reshaped the way I approach both business and life.
Leslie helped me get clear on my core values, refine my vision, and build the structure that Mush Love needed to thrive. From creating a solid business plan to developing SOPs, streamlining our product lineup, and focusing on what truly matters, she’s taken the overwhelming parts of running a business and made them work for me instead of against me.
But what sets her apart isn’t just her business expertise—it’s the way she helps me stay true to myself, my principles, and the mission behind Mush Love. In an industry that’s constantly evolving, it’s easy to get caught up in trends or pressures, but Leslie has helped me navigate growth in a way that feels authentic and aligned.
More than anything, she’s been an incredible friend. When things get hard or dark, she’s there. And that kind of unwavering support has made all the difference—not just in my business, but in my life.
