We recently connected with Alex Dibrizzi and have shared our conversation below.
Alex, appreciate you joining us today. Let’s start with a fun one – what’s something you believe that most people in your industry (or in general) disagree with?
This reminds me of being in elementary school with my fourth grade teacher. She would take away my recess from me just about every day for drawing in class, she would always say “ Thats what art class was for “. Then growing up, my parents, and teachers always telling me “Art it not a career, you cant make money off art”. To now being in art shows almost every weekend, and soon enough being able to do my art full time.
Alex, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My name is Alexander Chase Dibrizzi, I am a abstract expressionist street style portrait painter. I graduated with a bachelors degree in industrial product design from Pratt Institute in Brooklyn. My mediums are acrylics, pens, and spray paints on canvas. I create because it makes me feel free and at Peace, it is my passion to inspire others. My process: beginning with the background I using three to four colors that complement each other. From there, I add textures into the paint before it drys. Next I add the portrait in a way the background texture compliments the facial features and colors used. As I am paint the portrait, I choose a focal point and build the paint to relay dimension. I also use color shift and glow in the dark paint so that painting is never the same depending on the angle and light.
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
When I took my first leap of faith to quit my job and do only my art, i met a local artist that was living out of his truck. I ended up allowing him to stay at my place for a little, till he found a place with his uncle. We eventually started collaborating together, to the point he started getting greedy and selling work behind my back. It made me put up a wall with trusting people,
because people thought i was a fraud stealing his work. I lost sales, clients, and shows, ended up having to get a day job because it got so bad. so never collaborate with someone without a lawyer or agreement in writing
What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?
Taking bigger risks with events networking, and going to local markets.
