We recently connected with Alex Deng, Robert Rojas, Brandon Lau and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Alex Deng, Robert Rojas, Brandon Lau, thanks for joining us today. One of the things we most admire about small businesses is their ability to diverge from the corporate/industry standard. Is there something that you or your brand do that differs from the industry standard? We’d love to hear about it as well as any stories you might have that illustrate how or why this difference matters.
In our industry, we do not only perform skilled physical therapy. We also bridge a gap that is not covered by insurance, providing performance training after a patient/client is deemed to be too advanced for traditional physical therapy. For example, if you sustain an injury, traditionally you go through the typical steps in order to be seen for rehabilitation. Once you reach certain therapy goals, insurance will typically deem treatment after this as “Not medically necessary”. So if you are in this gap of finishing physical therapy, but still unable to perform your sport or feel anything less than 100%, you would need to seek further help in the form of coaching, personal training, etc. The beauty of Moveology is the fact that we can guide our patients/clients from acute injury, through the gap, to 100% performance.
In addition to the standard above, in a typical orthopedic/sports physical therapy setting, providers are seeing more than 1 patient each hour. Due to low insurance reimbursements and high demand, companies expect providers to see multiple patients at a time to maximize profits and to get patients in. At Moveology, we strive to provide a high quality private treatment, keeping all appointments strictly 1 on 1. Rest assured, you can get high quality treatment with the typical physical therapy model. However, we cater to the patient/client who would like to keep their sessions fully 1 on 1 for more precise attention to detail to address their specific needs.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
We got into our industry early in our lives. In order to become a physical therapist, just like many professions, you need to go through a lot of schooling. 4 years of undergraduate + 3 years of graduate school to obtain a Doctorate in Physical Therapy. We all ended up in outpatient orthopedic and sports because that is our passion! After working in various large physical therapy companies, we felt the need to address limitations as described in the previous question. We provide high quality, 1 on 1, private physical therapy and performance training to help individuals take care of injuries, get back to their sport/physical goals, and attempt to decrease the risk for future injuries. We collaborate with whoever the patient/client deems important in their journey. We have collaborated with patient’s/client’s physicians, occupational therapists, additional physical therapists, chiropractors, personal trainers, family members, coaches, athletic trainers, etc. What sets us apart from others is our willingness to earn your business and our dedication to the quality of our work. Since we provide high quality 1 on 1 sessions, we have flexibility throughout each day of the week, including weekends. We have seen patients/clients that have very busy schedules, treating them very early in the morning, late in the evening, many hours during the weekend, all while providing the best treatment possible. We provide a very tailored experience, providing communication as well as treatment sessions outside of the typical 8-5pm corporate world hours. You speak directly to a Doctor of Physical Therapy, addressing your concerns and ensuring that this is the right fit. If not, we will provide unbiased suggestions in order to help, is appropriate.
We truly pride ourselves on the experience we provide and it is very important that our patients/clients are happy with their experience.

We’d love to hear about how you met your business partner.
Alex: I have known Brandon since the summer before going into high school, way back in the day. We went to the same high school, we went to The University of Texas together, and subsequently we went to Texas Tech Health Sciences Center for Physical Therapy school. We have worked together in a few places together as well, from prior to physical therapy school and after. Robert and I met during one of my clinical rotations, while I was in physical therapy school. He was my Friday clinical instructor, since my primary clinical instructor was not in clinic on Fridays. We immediately created a bond and a friendship that has flourished into what it is now. Not only do I view these two as friends, but they are brothers to me. They were both in my wedding party and we were both a part of Brandon’s wedding. We all have worked together and now we are all trying to grow Moveology together in hopes of creating a premium experience for our patients and creating something more for our family and future children.

Can you talk to us about how your funded your business?
Our story about funding is very straight forward. We took money out of our own pockets to create our business. From the minute legal details, to the space that we work out of, we used our own money. Another reason why we pride ourselves on delivering the best experience possible. We have our own hard earned money on the line.
