Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Alex Davis. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alex , appreciate you joining us today. We’d love to hear about a project that you’ve worked on that’s meant a lot to you.
One of the most meaningful projects I’ve worked on was documenting the opening of a playground park (that hadn’t been renovated in 50 years) in my neighborhood of Lincoln Park, San Diego. For decades, families in my neighborhood — predominantly Black and Brown — had to leave the community just so our children could experience something as simple and vital as structured play.
I approached this project through both photography and filmmaking, creating a three-minute short film on my Super 8 camera. I wanted to encapsulate not only the physical space, but also the emotion — the joy, excitement, and deep sense of relief this park brought to our community. As a mother raising three children here, I felt personally connected to the project. I also gathered stories and feedback from other parents through a survey to better understand how the lack of accessible play spaces had impacted families over the years.
Through this work, I hoped (and hope) to show that play is not just recreational — it’s essential for children’s growth, creativity, and sense of belonging. The project reminded me how critical it is to invest in spaces for joy, especially in historically under-resourced communities like Lincoln Park. Small changes, like a playground finally opening its gates, can represent much larger shifts in reclaiming dignity and childhood.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I’m originally from Albany, Georgia and currently based in San Diego, California, where I am raising three children and serving as a student and Teaching Assistant at Arizona State University. My interest in photography began early, when I received a Polaroid camera as a child. Over time, I expanded my skills by teaching myself film photography — studying composition, lighting, and learning to develop both black-and-white and color film.
Today, I focus primarily on documentary and street photography. While I no longer offer services for hire, I occasionally volunteer my photography to organizations that align with my values. What I believe distinguishes my work is my sincere southern hospitality, authenticity, and a deep love for storytelling.
I am most proud of creating work that preserves memory and highlights the beauty of ordinary everyday life, especially in communities often overlooked. My hope is that my photography offers a real and lasting sense of connection.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
Storytelling has always been at the heart of my creative journey. My work is driven by a deep belief that even the most ordinary moments hold meaning and deserve to be preserved. Photography allows me to honor those quiet, everyday experiences that often get overlooked, but are so essential to who we are.
Memory preservation is also a central part of my mission. As I’ve grown older, I’ve come to understand how photographs serve not just as reminders of the past, but as living pieces of it. Through my work, I hope to create images that feel timeless — ones that carry forward personal and collective histories in a way that words sometimes cannot.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
For me, the most rewarding part of being a creative has been the opportunity to build relationships within the creative community. Networking, collaborating, and learning from other photographers and artists has deeply enriched my practice. I’ve been fortunate to meet so many talented and generous individuals who have not only inspired me, but also helped me grow, both personally and creatively.
