We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Alex Davis a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alex , appreciate you joining us today. The first dollar you earn is always exciting – it’s like the start of a new chapter and so we’d love to hear about the first time you sold or generated revenue from your creative work?
Last year I self-published my first book and sold it in my personal online store. The first person to purchase a copy was a friend from back home in Georgia — her name is Jessie — and I remember thinking, ‘wow’ I am officially a published author. It didn’t matter to me if she was the only person that would buy the book, I published and sold a book! It was something I had wanted as a child and adolescent, so to make it happen in my own way, on my own time, was so fulfilling.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
How you got into your craft: I first became interested in film photography as a child. Growing up in the 90s, we did not have digital cameras or iPhones, so using a film camera was pretty basic knowledge. I would use my Mom’s point and shoot cameras and she also gifted me my own Polaroid camera for Christmas one year. As I grew older and digital became the norm, I wandered away from film, but began again in 2016. To me, making film photos feels more organic and the process of controlling how your film photo will turn out before taking the photo, vs editing afterward, is a far more fulfilling feeling.
What type of creative works you provide: I create film photos using both 35mm and medium format cameras. I am also in the early stages of developing my own film at home so that I can have full creative control of each and every frame I make.
What you think sets you apart from others: My authenticity. I am very ‘what you see, is what you get’ with my work. I don’t separate myself from my brand and or work, so on my Instagram you will see film photos, but also see my kids at soccer practice or a selfie taken on my iPhone. I always want to be authentic with who I am and what I stand for, and I think this is reflected in my work.
What are you most proud of and what are the main things you want potential clients/followers/fans to know about you/your work: I am most proud of my growth and constant drive to learn new things and progress. The main things I want people to know about my work is that my goal in each photo is to highlight community; whether that be my own community, a specific community, the film community, etc.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
My goal in my creative journey is simply to share and tell stories. Every frame has a story within it that I may specifically highlight, or that is left up to interpretation. The more I share, the more I feel connected to others and the more others learn about different histories or communities.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
For me, the most rewarding aspect of being a creative is the process. I get so much joy and fulfillment out of having a vision and bringing it to life, from loading the film in my cameras to developing that same film and hanging it to dry. I’ve created something from start to finish. It’s an indescribable feeling.
