We’re excitedto introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Alex Copeland. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Alex below.
Alex, appreciate you joining us today. The first dollar your business earns is always special and we’d love to hear how your brand made its first dollar of revenue.
I gained my first client by practicing and posting photos of my cookies online. When I first started I would wait to get an order to try new techniques. After a while I had a friend who owned a farm market who invited me to bake cookies for his shop. That allowed me to try new ideas, techniques, and create fun designs to advertise my business. Every week I was able to share new creations and that allowed me to gain my first client.
Alex, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I started my business because I wanted to do what I was passionate about. I had been doing drag for a little over a year at that point and I have always enjoyed baking. One day I was working at a small boutique gift shop and I wondered what I could do and work for myself. I remembered these cookies I wanted to try decorating and went home to try my hand at it. After I practiced a few times I started selling to friends and family. After a year of cookie decorating I decided to combine my passion for drag and cookie decorating to teach cookie decorating workshops. It was a fun journey realizing I wanted to decorate custom cookies and teach workshops in drag. I’m most proud of the visibility I brought to the cookie community as a member of the LGBTQ+ community. So many times I teach workshops to people who have never met a drag queen before and if that helps anyone with their journey or helps expand their views then I am happy.
Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
The best source of new clients for me has been through social media. I try and have a good presence on the platforms and share my creations with everyone. My products are visual so it has really helped people to see what I can make and what designs I can offer.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
I had to unlearn the idea I have to do everything on my own. I have so many resources and people who are willing to help out. I was afraid to ask for help. Now I know asking for help isn’t a sign of weakness and you should utilize your friends and family. They want to help and it’s okay to get assistance.
