We were lucky to catch up with Alex Caruso recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Alex, thanks for joining us today. It’s always helpful to hear about times when someone’s had to take a risk – how did they think through the decision, why did they take the risk, and what ended up happening. We’d love to hear about a risk you’ve taken.
The biggest risk for me was when I moved from Italy to the United States. Leaving everyone and everything I knew, to pursue something unknown. From learning English to meeting new people, adapting to new places and a new home, and making new friends. All of these were challenges that I had to face. I think the fact that I am young helped me with all of those problems.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I wanted to direct movies since I was 14 years old. I started with making little videos at home or with friends, and then when time passed I just learned new techniques to tell and show a good story. Directing a movie is a very difficult task. You get asked millions of questions, and sometimes you don’t even know the answers. The biggest problem that I probably faced was directing the new horror movie called The Whistler. Starting from trying to find a good story that could potentially interest people. It took us 2 months to write the story and the screenplay. Then more problems came up with deciding what camera movement I wanted to have and, therefore what was the best solution when it comes to visual storytelling. I think this is probably my strength, I do like to make things more complicated, and I like moving a lot and juxtaposing different scenes together to make it seamless. “If it was easy, it wouldn’t be worth much”. I think that my philosophy as a director is a little different than the others, this does not mean better, it’s just different. However, I do think that when things are different it might interest people even more.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
You get the chance to play a lot with your thoughts and to be constantly thinking and experimenting with your mind. You are doing different tasks at the same time. I believe that this is the most fun part as a creator.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
I would like to experiment and test myself with different genres. So far I have only directed horror, but, I would also like to make fantasy and drama movies. as well as an action movie, and maybe one day a movie of a superhero. However, my biggest challenge will be to make a religious movie that will certainly require years of research and development.
