We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Alex Carneiro a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Alex, thanks for joining us today. What do you think matters most in terms of achieving success?
What is success? How do you define it? From person to person everyone has a different and yet similar idea of it. For many, successful people make a lot of money, west expensive clothes and have nice cars. But what about happiness and health? Those are on the bottom of many’s list. So what does it take to be successful? Well first one must have a definition for their own meaning of success and create steps to reach them. No matter what it means to each and one of us the approach will have to be similar; consistency, hard work, facing struggles and patience. If you truly want to be successful those are all key items that must be applied and considered frequently.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I was born in Brazil and raised all my life around the globe. Was primarily raised in Rome and Santiago de Chile where I learned that international traveling was an essential part of self growth. At the age of 18 I arrived in the USA and started my college education in Exercise Physiology and Nutrition. As of a young age I knew I wanted the “American Dream” like many of my favorite movie stars; Arnold, Sylvester and Jean Claude. So I followed my intuition, graduated college as early as possible and started that first goal of mine which was competing as a bodybuilder. Skip 8 years later and I was already at the Mr OLYMPIA competing amongst the top 15 athletes of that year. After being done venturing in the competing world, I wanted to write a book about my experiences in a superficial world where people confuse health as physical image. After a year or so I self published my book and went on to my next adventure which was hosting 3 years of a national television show on Univision; the largest Hispanic television network. The show was amazing and it gave me a chance to further educate the Hispanic community with eating, training and self mastery advice. During all these years living these adventures I was also working with some pro athletes, Celebrities and my favorite the military. One day my fiancé decided she wanted to open her own studio so we both ventured to what was going to be our toughest venture yet. Skip 6 years later and we now own a personal training studio that focuses on health and fitness for everyone with 7 employees. It’s amazing being able to help those in need and help them attain the health , body and fitness they desire.
Our studio now has helped hundreds of Colorado individuals by teaching them sustainable and lifestyle habits they can add to their daily routines to aid them in their own journeys.
Can you tell us the story behind how you met your business partner?
I’ve had a few previous business partners on some smaller ventures that have been terrible choices to work with. So opening a business with my fiancé , now my wife seems like an obvious choice. It’s a perfect balance between the both of us as she handles matters I have no previous experience with and I help her with the ones she can’t or doesn’t know how to do. We met almost 10 years ago and I knew that by starting a business with her could affect our intra personal relationship. So we balance our time by knowing when to stop taking about work and actual be husband and wife and not business partners.
Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
Honesty. I tell all the future and current clients to remember that the “magic” doesn’t come from the few hours that they work with us here at the gym, but from all their own decisions in the hundreds of hours when we don’t see them. Honesty is key in any business so the client doesn’t feel like we will do all the work for them.
