Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to ALEX BOLIG. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
ALEX, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Can you talk to us about how you learned to do what you do?
One of the biggest things that hold new photographers back is their equipment, or lack thereof. They don’t know what camera to buy, what lenses are good, or even how to edit. This stage of waiting to buy can last a while, that’s why I recommend to just use what is accessible to you. Even something like your phone has a ton of potential and can teach you more about photography than most think. Almost all new phones have amazing cameras compared to a few years ago. Using a phone can teach you crucial parts of photography such as, shot composition, lighting, and subject positioning. Learning these before ever buying a camera can help you not only grow to be better, but show you what kind of camera/lens setup you would do best to start with. If you tend to zoom in more and like compression, you would buy a longer lens. If you like to shoot at night or in darker areas, you would probably go for a mirrorless camera with good reviews for night photography.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers?
I am a photographer based out of Central Florida, and my passion is automotive and portrait photography. I got started because of a friend that I met in high school, he was taking a photography class and had his own camera. We grew as great friends and he said he wanted to start doing some automotive photoshoots. So, I messaged some people and started scheduling some photoshoots. The first few went great, but then he started not being able to make a few shoots. So, I took my dads older camera and started doing them myself. This pushed me to learn more on the spot and I really enjoyed it. That wasn’t my first time ever shooting a car though. For years before that I played a video game on Xbox called Forza Horizon. In this game there is a photo mode, and me and a few others would do entire photo sets within the game and post them on Instagram. This is truly where I learned about photography. so when I made the switch to real life, It wasn’t foreign to me.
Looking back, are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
Other photographers are not your enemies, they are your friends! Being from a smaller town I felt the need to fight for my shoots, but that was unnecessary. Everyone has their own style of photos and people who want pictures done will lean to the style they like best. Instead of fighting your peers in photography, meeting up and talking could be one of the best things you do. There is so much to learn in photography that one person cannot have all the answers.
