We were lucky to catch up with Alex recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alex, appreciate you joining us today. Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
As a teacher on TikTok, my initial project was to shed light on the life of a substitute teacher, focusing on strategies to foster an inclusive and safe classroom environment. To my surprise, the positive feedback poured in, and I soon realized that sharing my experiences as an educator could have a profound impact. Not only did fellow teachers engage, but even non-educators began seeking insights from my classroom adventures, sparking a broader conversation on inclusivity. While my content now encompasses a blend of lifestyle and educational themes, promoting a sense of belonging for all students remains a constant and passionate priority in my work along with validating teacher’s feelings in our current climate.
Alex, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I am a special education teacher and a TikTok content creator, known as @outofoffice.alex on TikTok and Instagram. In my primary role, I am fortunate to work in a fully inclusive school, where students with disabilities and those without are all integrated into general education settings, receiving support as needed within the classroom.
My journey into social media began with a video that went viral, detailing how I was unexpectedly hired to substitute teach for a Chinese language program, despite not speaking Chinese or even applying for the position. This experience occurred during a substitute teacher shortage immediately after my student teaching internship. The video’s explosive online popularity led me on a path of self-discovery, revealing the depth and complexity of teaching beyond my initial perceptions. I started sharing both the humorous moments in my classroom and the stories of how I fostered inclusivity for students who felt like they didn’t belong.
What distinguishes me from other teacher TikTokers is my unique perspective as a teacher in a fully inclusive school, where I work with a diverse range of students with varying needs. Through my work, I’ve acquired invaluable insights into providing inclusive education for students who may face challenges in speaking, reading, walking, and more. I’ve integrated the principles of Universal Design for Learning into my content, sharing stories and strategies inspired by my school’s approach.
My most significant source of pride is having a platform to showcase how Universal Design for Learning can be effectively applied. I also take pride in providing a sense of community for teachers who may sometimes feel isolated in the modern educational landscape. My content is characterized by its blend of humor and education, and it serves as a means to challenge stereotypes related to the abilities of individuals with disabilities.
Ultimately, I aim to demonstrate that inclusive education and the joy of learning are accessible to all, regardless of their unique needs or abilities. My hope is to inspire, educate, and entertain, and I invite potential clients, followers, and fans to join me on this journey of empowerment, transformation, and laughter.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
In my journey as a teacher TikToker, my overarching goal is to evoke a sense of positivity and empowerment. I’m deeply driven to ensure that both educators and students have a voice in today’s evolving educational landscape. My mission extends to equipping teachers with valuable strategies for inclusive education, particularly in accommodating students with disabilities within the general classroom setting. Moreover, I am committed to fostering an environment where students from diverse backgrounds not only feel welcomed but also truly safe and at ease within the classroom. Ultimately, it’s about making education a place where everyone can thrive and feel heard
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
For me, the most gratifying aspect of being a creator is witnessing the tangible impact my content, stories, and humor have on people’s lives. I’ve received heartfelt feedback from educators who credit my content with enhancing their ability to build stronger student relationships. Additionally, individuals within the disability community and dedicated advocates have shared their stories of mistreatment within the education system, expressing gratitude that schools are striving for positive change. The transformation of mindsets within the teaching community is another deeply rewarding outcome of this creative journey, as it brings hope for a brighter future in education.
