We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Alethia Tucker a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alethia, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Let’s start with the story of your mission. What should we know?
If you’re like me you’ve had a moment — You’ve hit a point where you wonder “what have I done with my life?” You’ve made great accomplishments and have been blessed beyond
measure to experience some awesome things; however, you wonder, “What does all of this
amount to? Am I doing all that I’m supposed to do? Am I reaching my best me?”
Well, that time came for me a few years ago. I was on the brink of turning 50. I had an
awesome job, dream family, and lifelong friends that all helped to make my life incredibly
blessed. But, deep down I knew there was more.
Who would think that a bookmark would be the catalyst to changing my entire life?
As I approached 50, I began planning a party. I wanted a cute take-home gift for my guests. I
jotted down 50 lessons that I learned over the years, and had them printed and laminated on
bookmarks. To my surprise, they were a hit! The bookmarks were the subject of numerous
conversations on the night of my celebration, and in the coming days many friends told me how
inspiring they had been.
Those bookmarks were the catalyst to writing my first book, 50 Things That I’ve Learned On My
Way to 50, and the beginning of a life changing shift.
Writing the book launched a deep dive into emotions, beliefs and realizations that made me
come face to face with so much of what was holding me back from reaching my greatest
potential. Through the sometimes painstaking moments of writing, I came to the surprise
realization that I was my biggest hindrance. I was so focused on perfecting me, that I missed the
fact that the present me was enough.
As I began discovering more of me, a thought crossed my mind. How many other women in the
age band of 45+ are hindering their “best me?” What can I do to help?
Thus was born Jolease. Jolease Enterprises offers a platform of value for women… a valued
space that fosters the opportunity for women to understand themselves, stand firm in the force
they are in the world, and marry those two in designing the life and career that they dream of

We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
I was a teenager in the 80s. I was a dependent living on Bolling AFB in Washington DC when my daily walk to the bus stop turned tragic. I walked to the bus stop and quickly felt the impact of something hitting me. I recall spiraling, there was dirt, smoke, screeching, screaming, yelling and then THUMP I laid flat on the asphalt and as I turned to orient myself I saw the tire of a yellow school bus less than 1 foot from my head. I had been hit by a school bus while walking to the bus stop. I had bumps and bruises, but major damage had been done to my left foot. It was badly mangled. I withstood 5 operations and a lifetime of pain. Much too the surprise of the surgeons, they were able to save my foot; however, life changed based on the limitations that directly related to the mobility I had in my foot. Those days were incredibly hard for a 16 year old; however, I learned a few valuable lessons that help me till this day.
1- Buckle but don’t break. I endured incredible pain in the months following my accident. I went through pain that even the strongest morphine drip didn’t always soothe. My lesson – There are going to be periods in life that truly could break me however, I have to bend with it. Know that it doesn’t have to take destroy me.
2-Don’t let anyone’s probabilities negate your possibilities. My possibilities far outweigh what can probably happen to me. They had a doomed diagnosis hanging over my life, the doctors really didn’t know if they were going to be able to save my foot. Youth and my determination to rehabilitate helped in me having my foot today. My lesson – I could have given up to their probabilities but I chose not to, and I can’t give into the negative things that may come m way now. It’s during that time that I have to push and believe that greater is in store for me.
3-Sometime I may have to look back, but if I miss the opportunity to do so don’t let it stop me from moving forward. I often wonder what would have happen if I looked back when I heard something behind me on the day that I was hit. How if seeing the bus coming my way could have alerted me to jump on the other side. I realized that I can’t dwell on what could have happened. My lesson – I have to look at life in the same way. I will need what’s behind me because there are lessons there. However, I learned to understand that even if I miss those lessons, I can still move forward and persevere.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
I graduated from high school in 1982. Academically, I did well. I wasn’t a scholar. On the other hand, I was an honor roll student. I felt that I was prepared for any academic challenge. I was so wrong. I entered my freshman year at Georgetown and immediately entered unfamiliar territory. In all my years in school, I quickly realized that I was not prepared for the rigors ahead of me. I suffered tremendously. After performing poorly on many assignments, my self-confidence took a major hit. As time went on, as I approached my junior year, I learned to utilize my resources. My resources helped me to make it through. As God would have it, there was a dean at the school who was determined to help me through. On graduation day, she saw me, grabbed my diploma from the table, walked over and gave me a huge hug. She said, “I saw you and wanted to give you this diploma personally.”
I worked incredibly hard to gain so much of what I didn’t have when I entered college. I learned to use my resources for support, tap into student led support groups and lean into paid resources when possible. I learned to study and write. More than anything I learned to have faith in my self and what I was capable of doing.
