We were lucky to catch up with Alethea Buchal recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Alethea, thanks for joining us today. Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
There are so many meaningful projects I’ve worked on and I’m currently working on, including my current album: Confessions, where I plan on being as real about myself as an artist and as a person as possible.
The most recent, meaningful project besides the album, is a benefit show Jamie Miller and I organized for Save the Children, an international nonprofit supporting children in war-torn countries.
It was super important for me, because the Israel-Gaza war hits super close to home, as my brother lives in Israel. The amount of pain and outrage and intensity around the war made it really hard for me to know how we as humanity could connect around it, instead of extending the intensity and the hatred. Jamie and I figured people can always stand together when it comes to children. As long as we are supporting future generations, as long as we can come together about at least one thing, we can sow seeds of peace.

Alethea, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
What sets me apart as a person in the music industry, is that I am very big-picture-oriented and as a politics major, I really want to do what I can to help make this industry and world a better place, as cliche as that sounds. I think there needs to be a lot more emphasis on mental, physical and even spiritual health in every industry, but especially the music industry.
I’m both an organizer, an artist and a teacher. Teaching music on a variety of instruments has only made me a better musician. As an organizer, I like t organize shows and events around various truly kick-ass nonprofits including Save the Children, Imagine Scholars, Planned Parenthood and LA Mission.
As an artist, I’m more complicated. I got into music because of the intense emotions and pain I felt as a child in a divorced household, something I would never give back, because it’s given me a sense of character and a resilience to unite those with very different perspectives and backgrounds. I’m a pop-rocker with soul – soul, because I sing with all the intensity of the emotions that have bombarded me my entire life, pop because I write simple catchy hooks and a rocker – because I absolutely love performing and bringing down the house!

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
Being able to express myself. It’s so important for humans to be able to express themselves and the innermost, intense, glorious, unique thoughts and feelings, which plague us. So much healing can come from expression and every human has that inherent need to be seen, heard and felt, music just accentuates that need and brings it to life.
I also love being part of an industry that’s constantly fascinating, fun and being surrounded by like-minded individuals. I joke that the music industry throws the best parties and I don’t think I’m wrong.

Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
I’ve had a really tough go at being an artist and am finally feeling home in my own skin and in what I can provide our industry. I’ve been homeless, jobless, hopeless- all the “lesses,” but I’ve found that there is so much kindness and love in the world and hope if you can tap into it. Sometimes it’s just about letting go of your pride and asking for help. Or learning that skill that you know is preventing you from taking the next step! I feel like fear is an organism you can feed just as much as love is and I’ve spent so much of my life feeding into fear, I’m truly ready to trust myself and the process of life and feed into the love.
