We were lucky to catch up with Aleta Eversley recently and have shared our conversation below.
Aleta, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Let’s talk legacy – what sort of legacy do you hope to build?
I hope my legacy would be a person of integrity who inspired others to step out on faith to bring their vision to past as an entrepreneur. Starting with my children, I raise them to know they can do anything they put their minds to. I recognized the passion and gifts that was within them and I helped established a business for each one.
Aleta, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My name is Aleta Eversley. I’m originally from Richmond, VA. I am an Army Veteran and mother of four. I have always had a passion for numbers, therefore when I entered into the military, my field was in logistics. After serving a one-year tour in Iraq, I separated from the military to prevent from having to continuously deploy and leave my three daughters. After separating from the military, I worked as an Executive Logistician and started my tax and accounting business in 2007. I earned my bachelor’s degree in Business Administration during my eleven-year military tenure and my master’s degree in Business Administration with a concentration in Managerial Accounting in 2012. I have assisted several entrepreneurs form their nonprofit and for-profit organizations. I assist with financial statement reviews, measurement, valuation and disclosure of short- and long-term assets, internal control procedures, cost management, cost allocations, business process improvement, budgeting, analysis, forecasting and strategy, cost and variance analysis, individual and business taxation, bookkeeping and payroll services. I am most proud of the fact that I have given each of my children the opportunity to be business owner themselves by supporting their passion and starting a business for them when they were in high school. Through my coaching, two of my children have successful and thriving businesses of their own today. The main things I want potential clients to know about me is that I operate with a spirit of excellence. I am resilient and have overcome a lot of challenges in order to be successful in business for 15 years.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
In 2014, I went through a divorce after being married for 8 years. We had just franchised with one of the top tax franchises in the world in 2012. Needless to say, the divorce was rough. I experienced financial difficulties due to not receiving the financial support I needed. I depleted my savings and retirement accounts in order to ensure the rent was paid, 18 employees were compensated, and the lights stayed on. I went back to work as an accountant in the manufacturing and contracting field which helped financially to sustain the businesses. Franchising was a great experience at first until I realized what my core value of providing excellent and quality service wasn’t what they valued. It was a numbers game for them, and I quickly realized I needed to get back to my values. Therefore, in 2017 I sold the franchise and continued to provide the quality service with excellence I had set out to do in 2007.
Have you ever had to pivot?
I am currently pivoting in my business, career and life. After dealing with depression for eight years after my divorce, close friends of mine has been diligently supporting me and encouraging me to get back into what I love. They kept telling me people needed the knowledge I have. I used to teach classes to entrepreneurs when I started a non-profit Women’s Business Center in 2008. I partnered with the Small Business Administration and the local Texas Workforce to assist with resources for the entrepreneurs who attended the classes. I taught financial literacy with the local Help Centers in two cities. However, after I sold the franchise, I moved the tax and accounting business to my home office in 2017. My home became my safe place as well as my hiding place. I was ashamed of how the marriage and divorce transpired. I was ashamed to attend church again because the new wife and I know the same people. I have been hiding from the world for 8 years outside of taking care of my son and still servicing my long-term clients. When I wanted to give it all away, the bathtub and the baby, my loyal clients and friends refused to allow me to do so. My clients continued to refer people to me because they knew I operated with a spirit of excellence, and I wouldn’t let them down. My friends continued to speak life into me and kept creating opportunities for me to get out of the house and take my rightful place again in society. Recently, one of my close friends submitted my name to a magazine to write an article about financial literacy. Soon after that, she put my name in for this interview. We both just attended an amazing Women in Business conference in Atlanta, Ga that changed my whole perspective. This close friend has been literally pulling me out of my pit and has opened doors to where I can now see that the knowledge, I have is needed by so many people. I recently started a business for my 15-year-old son that has a nonprofit component to it where I am teaching young teen boys between the ages of 14-17 entrepreneurship, financial literacy and work ethic all while working in the business. We just partnered with the Texas Workforce again in order for their over 18-year-old students with disabilities to work in the business to learn a trade that will prepare them for the outside world. I am now studying to test to become a Certified Managerial Accountant, I am planning a collaboration with several other entrepreneurs in order to provide a combination of services to my existing and future clients in the areas of finance, insurance, credit repair along with tax and accounting.
