We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Aleshia Moyamba a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Aleshia , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Do you think your parents have had a meaningful impact on you and your journey?
My parents have always instilled in my brother and me the importance of knowing who you are, whose you are, and where you come from. They believed a strong sense of identity would keep us grounded, making us less likely to succumb to societal pressures and expectations.
One of the most powerful ways they reinforced this was through daily affirmations. When I was younger, my father would have my brother and me recite:
I am a leader, not a follower.
Education is the key to all success.
I am a proud African-American.
At the time, I didn’t fully grasp how much those words would shape me. But as I navigated different stages of life—whether in school, my career, or personal growth—I found myself making decisions that aligned with the values they instilled. Because of them, I’ve had the confidence to stand firm in who I am, pursue education as a tool for advancement, and take pride in my heritage.
Their lessons continue to guide me, serving as a foundation for approaching challenges, leadership, and success.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is Aleshia Moyamba, and I was born and raised in St. Louis, MO. I am a Senior Marketing Operations Manager and a writer with a passion for storytelling and strategy.
I earned my undergraduate degree in Communications from the University of Missouri-St. Louis and later completed my master’s degree in Communication Arts from Webster University. However, it took me a while to enter the marketing field. I initially worked in youth development, but over time, the emotional toll became too much. In 2016, I made the difficult decision to quit my job with no backup plan—a choice my parents didn’t fully agree with.
My journey into marketing started in 2015 when a mentor—now a good friend—asked me to support her nonprofit by creating monthly newsletters. It was the first time I was paid for my expertise, and it sparked a new direction for my career. After leaving youth development, I built a mock portfolio and eventually landed my first marketing and communications role in the nonprofit sector.
In 2019, I was laid off due to company budget cuts, but within weeks, I transitioned into a marketing role at a senior living company. I started as a Digital and Social Media Manager, later moved into Marketing and Communications, and in 2022, I shifted into Marketing Project Management to focus more on creative production and management. In this role, I was the point person for vetting, scheduling, and collaborating with a graphic designer to support 1,000 employees across multiple states. Every role I’ve held built upon the last, giving me hands-on experience in campaign management, social media, digital strategy, analytics, and high-impact project execution. This journey led to my promotion in November 2024 to Senior Marketing Operations Manager—a role where I bring everything full circle.
Beyond marketing, I am also a writer. In 2015, I published Momma, Is My Hair Good?, a children’s book; in 2020, I released Unconscious Heroes, a collection of short stories. I also write Spirit + Soul, a newsletter on Substack, and I have two books that have been written and are just waiting to be shared with the world.
My expertise in systems, processes, and procedures sets me apart—that is my superpower! No matter my role, I bring structure, efficiency, and strategic thinking to help projects and teams thrive. I am incredibly proud of my journey and grateful for how each experience has prepared me for where I am today.

Have any books or other resources had a big impact on you?
A few key books and resources have significantly shaped my management style, entrepreneurial mindset, and personal brand philosophy.
The first career book I purchased was Leave Your Mark by Aliza Licht. It was my introduction to building a personal brand and understanding how to stand out in my career. Around the same time, I was gifted The Path Redefined by Lauren Maillian, reinforcing the importance of embracing individuality and redefining success on my own terms. Both books helped me understand the power of strategic positioning and storytelling—skills essential in both my marketing career and my writing.
In addition to books, I have a yearly tradition that has been a guiding force in my leadership journey. Every year, for the past seven years, I’ve listened to a specific Marie Forleo Podcast episode featuring Brené Brown on leadership, vulnerability, and daring greatly. It serves as my annual reminder to show up as my authentic self, to lead with courage, and to embrace imperfect but intentional growth.
These resources have influenced how I approach leadership, branding, and career growth—helping me lean into authenticity, strategic storytelling, and purpose-driven work in marketing and writing.

What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
Building my reputation within my market has been a combination of expertise, consistency, integrity, and authenticity. A big part of it comes from my deep understanding of systems, processes, and procedures. I’ve always believed that strong, well-thought-out frameworks can set teams up for success, and I’ve worked hard to position myself as someone who can streamline operations and help drive results.
Another key factor in building my reputation has been my adaptability. Over the years, I’ve navigated several career transitions—from working in youth development to marketing to eventually shifting into project management and senior operations roles. I’ve made it a point to perform in each role and excel by embracing new challenges and constantly learning.
One thing I believe has contributed to my reputation is that I do what I say I will do and strive to do it well. Whether meeting deadlines, delivering results, or building trust, I hold myself accountable. I approach my work with integrity and try to ensure my actions align with my values. I also believe in adding a little humor to the mix, because work can be challenging, and sometimes, laughter is the best way to build connections and maintain a positive work environment.
Finally, I’ve worked hard to build my brand through my writing and ability to communicate clearly and authentically. From my books to my Spirit + Soul newsletter, I’ve been able to engage with people who value transparency, creativity, and insight—things I aim to bring into every aspect of my work.
