We recently connected with Alena Nazarova and have shared our conversation below.
Alena, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. What do you think matters most in terms of achieving success?
To be successful in the beauty industry today, talent alone isn’t enough. You have to understand the fundamentals of business—management, marketing, and presentation skills, among others. Our profession has evolved and become far more complex than it may seem from the outside. It’s a multifaceted career that requires a deep combination of knowledge, adaptability, and resilience.
One key to success is having a clear map of your goals. You need to know exactly what results you want to achieve, as this clarity provides direction and focus. Without it, burnout becomes a real risk, and it can make true success feel elusive.
Continuous learning is also crucial. The beauty industry is constantly changing with new trends, techniques, and technology, so never stop refining your skills. Networking is equally important—connecting with other professionals in the industry helps you stay inspired, learn from others, and even open new doors for collaboration.
Since the beginning, I knew these elements were essential. I went into this career understanding that technical skills alone wouldn’t lead to lasting success. Right from the start, I focused on learning the business side, building strong relationships, and constantly evolving my knowledge. This approach helped me navigate the challenges of the industry and maintain a steady path forward. I’ve always believed that a balanced mix of talent, business acumen, and a commitment to personal growth is what it truly takes to thrive in this field.

Alena, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I became a hairstylist in 2019, leaving behind a successful decade-long career in project management to follow my true passion. Transitioning into this field was a big leap—especially since I moved to a new country and started fresh at 30. In 2021, after earning my cosmetology license in New York, I was finally able to fully embrace this new career path.
I work in a range of areas, from working behind the chair to fashion and editorial hair styling. In 2022, I launched an educational project aimed at helping beauty professionals build essential management skills that can support their careers. Together, we’ve built a fantastic community of talented individuals who are all committed to growth and professionalism. Through this network, I met the team that would become BridalBloom, my wedding beauty business.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
One of the most rewarding aspects of being a wedding beauty artist is the incredible privilege of playing a part in one of the most memorable days of someone’s life. There’s a unique joy in helping a bride feel her most beautiful and confident, knowing that she will look back on these moments for years to come. The look on her face when she sees herself in the mirror is priceless—it’s a mix of excitement, joy, and confidence that makes all the work worth it.
Additionally, there’s something so special about the energy and emotions surrounding a wedding day. Being there to support the bride, calm any nerves, and be a part of that joyful atmosphere is truly fulfilling. I also love the creative freedom it allows; every bride’s style and vision are unique, so we get to bring those individual looks to life. There’s no better feeling than knowing we’ve contributed to a bride’s happiness and that our work helped make her day everything she dreamed it would be.

Do you think there is something that non-creatives might struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can shed some light?
I think one of the things non-creatives might find challenging to understand is just how much persistence and resilience are required in a creative journey. Pursuing a creative career isn’t always as glamorous as it might look from the outside—it’s full of ups and downs, constant learning, and a lot of vulnerability. Every piece of work we create is deeply personal, a mix of our skills, ideas, and even a bit of our soul, which we’re putting out there to be judged.
There’s also a balance between art and business. In the beauty industry, creativity alone won’t carry you forward; you have to build business acumen, handle logistics, and be an effective communicator. So, while our work may look effortless or purely artistic, there’s a lot happening behind the scenes.
Lastly, the need for continual growth is essential. Creative industries change quickly, and if we’re not constantly evolving, we’re falling behind. This constant push to adapt, improve, and stay inspired is both challenging and energizing. The creative journey demands patience, grit, and a commitment to staying true to your vision, even when it isn’t easy or certain. For those considering a creative path, know it’s worth every effort, but be prepared for a journey that will test and transform you.
