We recently connected with Aleksei Chebeliuk and have shared our conversation below.
Aleksei, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
This collaboration with ABC Studios at the dawn of 2020 stands as a hallmark in my career for several profound reasons, magnifying the essence and the breadth of the accordion’s influence in the modern entertainment sphere.
The opportunity to emerge as the chosen accordionist for this unique project reflects a significant acknowledgment from the niche of accordion musicians to the grand stages of Hollywood. Such recognition is not merely a personal triumph but a beacon of the accordion’s expanding cultural footprint, illustrating its sophistication and versatility to a wider audience.
My role extended beyond instruction; it encompassed the creative task of composing a cue for the actor’s role. This element of the project was particularly challenging and rewarding, as it necessitated a composition that could be both played on the accordion and sung to simultaneously. Crafting this dual-layered piece underscored the accordion’s expressive potential and highlighted my commitment to showcasing the instrument’s adaptability and charm.
Collaborating with Grayson Masefield, a figure of paramount stature in the accordion world, enriched the project’s dimensions. This partnership not only augmented the learning curve for the actor but also provided a fertile ground for artistic exchange, reinforcing the narrative of the accordion as a dynamic and compelling instrument.
The venture into teaching a Hollywood actor, who had never before ventured into accordion playing, for a globally recognized studio like ABC Studios, signifies a milestone in bridging the realms between the specialized accordion community and the expansive universe of international media. This endeavor not only projected the accordion onto a larger canvas but also fostered a newfound appreciation for its artistry among audiences unfamiliar with its sonic beauty.
Moreover, this project allowed me to champion the accordion’s allure and complexity on a prestigious platform. The challenge of ensuring the actor could believably perform the specially composed piece on screen, within a stringent timeline, was a testament to the instrument’s accessibility and my dedication as an educator and composer. Witnessing the actor’s performance, seamlessly integrating the accordion and vocals, was a moment of immense pride and a testament to the collaborative spirit of the project.
In conclusion, this unique undertaking with ABC Studios and the contributions from esteemed colleagues like Grayson Masefield, World Champion Accordionist, not only spotlighted the accordion in a contemporary context but also reinforced my mission to disseminate the joy and richness of accordion music. The project was a confluence of instruction, composition, and performance that not only fulfilled artistic and educational goals but also paved the way for the accordion’s continued resurgence in popular culture.
Aleksei, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Since I was seven years old, I have been stepping onto stages, weaving my journey through the complex world of music. This journey began with my participation in over 100 competitions and concerts during my years in music school and college. Each competition was an opportunity to showcase my dedication and passion for music, and I never returned without a prize, marking early successes that would pave the way for my future in music.
After graduating, my musical aspirations only grew stronger, leading me to create the music group “Smile Band.” As the solo producer, accordionist, and frontman of the band, I led us through more than 500 shows over five years, gracing both international and federal festivals. My role in “Smile Band” brought me to the attention of TV and radio, earning me spots in magazines and establishing me as a recognized figure in the music scene.
My move to the United States marked a significant chapter in my musical career. Here, I have performed in over ten states, bringing my show count in the US alone to over 600. It has been an honor to share the stage with celebrities from both the US and Europe, performing at historical venues that resonate with stories of legendary artists who came before me. From the Dolby Theater and Alex Theater to LAcma, The California Club, and The Penn Club, each performance has been a stepping stone, cementing my place in the musical landscape.
My story is not just one of musical achievements; it’s a reflection of my relentless passion for music. It’s about the moments I’ve created that bridge hearts and cultures through music’s universal language. My legacy is not solely in the accolades but in the lasting memories I’ve created for my audience, the inspiration I’ve shared with fellow musicians, and the indelible impact I’ve made on the world of music.
Are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
Reflecting on my journey as a musician and accordionist, I realize the paramount importance of understanding the music industry’s business side. Had I been more attuned to the power of networking, and had I delved into the rich insights offered by books, podcasts, and seminars by seasoned music industry professionals earlier, my path might have been even more enriched and perhaps smoother.
As I continue to grow in my career, I now prioritize staying connected with the wider music community, continuously seeking knowledge that will bolster both my artistic endeavors and my professional development.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
The Wilshire Ebell Theater, known for its architectural beauty and historical significance, provides the perfect backdrop for this concert. It’s an opportunity to connect with the audience on a profound level, showcasing the accordion in a light that many may not have experienced before. This event encapsulates my mission to elevate the perception of the accordion, bringing it to center stage in a classical concert setting, which is a rare occurrence in today’s music scene.
Moreover, this concert is a beacon for my broader goals. It serves as a milestone in my creative journey, underscoring my commitment to pushing the boundaries of what is expected from accordion music and exploring its possibilities in conjunction with an orchestra. It is a chance to demonstrate the instrument’s versatility and depth, challenging and expanding the audience’s musical tastes.
