Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Alejandro Meola. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alejandro, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Are you happier as a creative? Do you sometimes think about what it would be like to just have a regular job? Can you talk to us about how you think through these emotions?
Happiness comes and goes. As an artist or else, it’s human to wonder about greener pastures. Sometimes I pursue safety and stability, then I get bored and hit the road, until I need safety and stability again and so on. Eventually I guess I’ll break that cycle but what’s important to me is to keep searching and exploring.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I’m an independent singer, songwriter and guitarist. Born in Miami, grew up in Buenos Aires, based in New York City since 2013. I’ve recorded an eclectic catalog which I had the opportunity to perform live in cities like San Francisco, Austin, Nashville, London, Paris, Berlin and Barcelona among others.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
I often had to struggle with this idea from my family that with music I’d never be financially solvent. Didn’t grew up in an artistic environment, music was something you’d do as a hobby, not a serious career path. Occasionally I still have to fight that fear away.
Do you think there is something that non-creatives might struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can shed some light?
Non-creatives sometimes fail to dimension that while artists have material needs and bills to pay like everyone else, there’s also an intangible aspect of the craft itself, a sort of magic, that when it happens can be immensely rewarding and make all the struggles worthwhile. To some, it might even be more than gold.
