We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Alejandro Fertitta a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Alejandro thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Let’s talk legacy – what sort of legacy do you hope to build?
We aim to create drool-worthy content but more importantly, to help the South Florida food scene’s knowledge on dietary restrictions continue to grow via our social media pages. The amount of people that reach out to thank us for bringing gluten-free options to their attention is enough to make this worthwhile. This is the legacy we want to leave behind.
Alejandro, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
When I started Munch Miami back in 2014, I never thought it would be where it is today. This food blog turned professional photography service has had an important mission from the very beginning. You see, in 2012 I was diagnosed with a gluten-related condition and couldn’t find places in Miami where I could dine out. It was then that I decided to compile a list of gluten-free friendly spots** where people like me could eat. This list was published to a website (www.MunchMiami.com) and eventually it was transitioned to Instagram (www.Instagram.com/MunchMiami).
**Spots featured are all not celiac safe
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
Initially, Munch Miami began as a food blog. After a few years, I realized that I was having a much larger impact by posting delicious content on social media so I pivoted to dedicating my time to that craft. Via that medium, we managed to grow a large fan base in a much shorter time.
We are looking to bring back the blog piece to our website by next year.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
Definitely the reaction and comments we receive from our clients and followers. When a parent sends us a message thanking us for showing where they can take their children to eat, it makes our year! Similarly, when a client posts our images and praises our work it means the absolute world!
