We were lucky to catch up with Alejandro Chávez recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alejandro, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Before we get into specifics, let’s talk about success more generally. What do you think it takes to be successful?
Hi, I am happy to share ideas with this cool magazine. I think that enjoying what you do is one of the most important things in life, because it becomes something more, like a dream, a purpose. That’s what it takes to be successful, loving your talents and your work. Of course you need to have faith in yourself in order to achieve your goals, because it’s not easy when you are an independent artist or an entrepeneur, it requires a lot of patience.
Alejandro, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I graduated from INBAL-School of Design in 2018, then I started to work as a freelancer for clients who needed infographics, logos, and photo editing services. I was feeling right about helping people to give a stylish touch to their ideas, but in 2021 everything changed when I discovered Videogames Academy (a mexican school). It was a great experience learning about storytelling, character design, and video game production. With that knowledge I created my comic “O’CLOCK NOIR”, and I love my project, it’s what I’m most proud of. My comic has action, sci-fi, fashion, adventures, friendship, and mystery with a cinematographic approach. It follows the adventures of Alex, Amy Lady, and Shigeru in Tape Di Noir, a world within a film created by scientist Carol, who has been captured. This world is controlled by scientists Branont and Mustafa with their minions called Nu-Vo, so Alex and his friends will have to travel through different film eras as they face their enemies. The next step is to show my comic at comic conventions, and that’s what sets me apart from others: “believe in my project”.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
Nowadays we believe that an e-mail, text message or a call is enough to contact big companies, business owners or celebrities. Last year I traveled to Vancouver, Canada to show my comic, because it’s an important city for animation and comic industry. It was late November, so as you can imagine it was cold and snowing. I had to move around the city using public transportation and walking most of the time, with one clear purpose: showing my comic to different animation studios. Previously I sent e-mails to big studios such as Atomic Cartoons, Titmouse Canada, and WildBrain Studios, but since I didn’t get any answers I decided to go over there, and of course they let me in and I gave them fliers about my comic and my resume. It’s been 5 months and I still haven’t received any response, but it’s okay because I tried and now I’m a stronger person.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
Legacy, that’s the most rewarding aspect. As a creative person you can give the world different views of life thanks to stories, paintings, movies, video games, music, and more. It’s a nice way to contribute to society, and it’s amazing when people recognize your particular style. After all, imagination is what keeps humanity surviving.
