Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Alejandro Áboli. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Alejandro, thanks for joining us today. We’d love to hear about when you first realized that you wanted to pursue a creative path professionally.
I have always felt a fascination for creation and storytelling. My earliest memories are tied to questions about how a movie is made, and I had immense admiration for my uncle, who was a painter. Observing his paintings at home sparked a constant interest in art and the ability to tell stories.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
For those who may not be familiar with my work, I am Alejandro Áboli, an artist whose expression transcends the boundaries of conventional photography. I immerse myself in the realm of digital tools and collage to bring to life unique characters and scenarios that defy the ordinary. Inspired by creators such as Lachapelle, Nolan, and Wong Kar-Wai, I use photography as a means to tell stories that evoke emotions and foster deep personal reflection.
My work involves techniques like photographic decomposition and image assembly, giving rise to scenarios that dismantle the known world. Each image is meticulously composed as if it were a painting, interweaving visual elements to narrate a story. I approach digital composition conceptually, starting from a blank canvas.
My playful approach, highlighted in ‘The RedLine,’ my first series, serves as a bridge between reality and fiction, inviting viewers to explore the border between the past and the present, or the present and the future. I am inspired by influences from pop art, examining the impact of everyday objects on our lives and challenging social conventions through familiar symbols.
What sets me apart is the ability to blend the real and the surreal, encouraging viewers to immerse themselves in their own introspection. I take pride in creating a broad and shared narrative through my protagonists, whether human or landscapes, who inhabit hypothetical scenarios challenging conventional norms.
In essence, my work is the natural outcome of my desire to break free from the norms of logic, revealing the depths of the soul, and inviting viewers to embark on their own introspective journey.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
Since always, my goal has been to transcend the boundaries of traditional photography and explore new dimensions through digital tools and collage. As a filmmaker, I incorporate the essence of cinema into my art, creating scenarios and characters that defy the conventional. My mission is to tell stories that not only evoke emotions but also guide viewers towards deep self-reflection. I aim to challenge conventional norms and break with logic, creating a space where the real and surreal intertwine. My work is the natural expression of my intention to expose the depths of the soul, providing viewers with the opportunity to embark on their own introspective journey.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
Throughout my path, I faced challenges that tested my resilience, especially when I decided to merge my passion for cinema with photography, aiming to create something beyond conventional limits. This journey took a unique turn when I chose to paint with photographs, transforming my works into visual canvases rather than ordinary pictures.
This choice, though exciting for me, encountered resistance and skepticism in some quarters. Many couldn’t grasp the concept of crafting visual canvases by fusing film, photography, and collage techniques. Nevertheless, I chose to stand firm in my creative vision, seeing criticism as a stimulus to further refine my art rather than letting it discourage me.
As I overcame doubts and hardships, I discovered that this unique fusion became my distinctive signature. My works ceased to be conventional photographs and transformed into canvases that challenged established norms. This experience not only showcased my resilience in the face of adversity but also taught me to turn challenges into opportunities for creative growth.
Ultimately, the decision to paint with photographs became an authentic expression of my artistic vision, emphasizing the importance of maintaining creative integrity and resilience in the face of divergent opinions.
