Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Alejandra Martinez Dunphy. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alejandra , appreciate you joining us today. Going back to the beginning – how did you come up with the idea in the first place?
I have always loved design and architecture. My mother really believe in my talent and sent me to study abroad. I was born and raised in Peru. During my college years at The Savannah College of Art and Design I learned so much about design, architecture and fine arts. After college, I worked on several large architectural firms working on national and international projects. I gained valuable experience in interior architecture, construction and project management. After 10 years of being an employee I realized I wanted to start my own design studio. My mother was a successful business owner and executive. She taught me so many lessons in life, business and most importantly the value of family. Once I started having children that entrepreneurial will came to me. I thought to myself I would have more flexibility and freedom which is what I young family wish could have. I knew it wouldn’t be easy as I would have to establish a business, build a name and brand for myself. I started one project at a time with the motto of each client is special and I strived to be creative, resourceful and be connected with my clients. I am now in my 13th year as a business owner and I love it. I wake up every morning so excited about my day. The creative process is my therapy in life. I find that the older I am getting the more seasoned I have become. I have gained confidence and established a reputable brand for myself and my business.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I am the founder and design director at Alejandra Dunphy Studio, an Atlanta based interior design studio that specializes in residential and commercial interiors. Our portfolio consists of projects throughout the Southeast and internationally. We currently are working on residential projects in Atlanta, the British Virgin Islands and Belize. We have several office, restaurant and retail projects in our drafting table. We offer full turn key interior design services from architectural interiors, space planning to selections of finishes, lighting and furnishings. We have been recognized with several design awards, the most recent are two awards by the ASID (American Society of Interior Designers) for a restaurant and office project. Our work has been published in several magazines and books, such as Coastal Living, Interior Design, Modern Luxury Interiors, Jezebel Magazine and The Atlanta Journal Constitution.
I have over 20 years of design expertise all together. I am a NCIDQ certified and licensed interior designer and a LEED, Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, accredited professional. In addition to managing projects, I teach Interior Design at my alma mater, Savannah College of Art & Design, in Atlanta for over 6 years.
Understanding each client’s needs is critical to the design process. Our team strives to building and maintaining strong client relations. “We listen, investigate, brainstorm and collaborate to come with best design solutions for our clients”.
I love what I do and I find inspiration in nature, architectural history and textiles. My passion for art and traveling is reflected in the unique and contemporary designs. I thinks of interior design as total work of art in which all elements are brought together harmoniously with a purpose.
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
Our goal as a business is to offer a great experience to our clients. Our mission is to make sure we fulfil our clients vision and expectation and to become their representative during the building process. We love to receive calls from prospect clients who have been referred to us by a previous one. That is the best compliment we can receive.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being a design creative is to create memorable experiences. As interior designers we can impact the way how people live, work, play. I am fascinated with the study of human behavior and phycology in interiors. There are so many factors that influences the way people perceive a space.
