We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Alejandra Marez. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Alejandra below.
Alejandra, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Almost all entrepreneurs have had to decide whether to start now or later? There are always pros and cons for waiting and so we’d love to hear what you think about your decision in retrospect. If you could go back in time, would you have started your business sooner, later or at the exact time you started?
Do I wish that I started my business sooner or later? No. If I would have started sooner, I would be a bit lost. I use to work for another waxing salon and I’m thankful for the things I’ve learned there. Starting straight out of esti school wouldn’t have worked. You learn from experience, and I’m glad I did at that salon.
I think the time I started was perfect. I was at a point in my career that I thought I hated it. I would dread going to work, the excitement wasn’t there anymore. Unfortunately, it was simply the fact that I wasn’t happy where I was anymore. It wasn’t a good work environment for me and it made it difficult loving my career . My parents were my biggest motivation. They both made sure I wasn’t alone through this new journey.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Grwaxstudio, is a Latina owned waxing studio. It’s one of the things I’m most proud of. When I’m not in the suite, I’m either out hiking with my friends, trying new restaurants with my sister & cousins. I like to be out & about, constantly moving. I will give so much credit to all my clients who have trusted me from waxing them in my bedroom, at my parents house, to following me to my suite. I look forward to always catching up with them & their life changing into new things & somehow being part of that.
Being in this industry is more fun than what others make it seem. I provide full body waxing services so with what I do, its very intimate, & you create a great relationship with all these new people, who some might be very anxious to be undress with a total stranger. I love that after I’m done with their wax, they tell me that they’ve completely forgot they were getting waxed & wasn’t as bad as they thought. That’s when I know I’m doing my job right ! I hope to continue growing, and being able to meet more people, I just love what I do. 10/10 recommend everyone to at least getting waxed once in their lives
Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
WORD OF MOUTH! I’m the most talkative person you’ll ever know. I enjoy getting to know others, bonding with them, or simply just creating a relationship with them. I try to make sure anyone who I’ve provided services for are comfortable with me. When you make them feel confident and good with you, that goes such a long way. They’ll let their friends know how that experience was with you, it feels good knowing you were able to have them trust you without evening knowing you, just by their friends telling them their good experience with you.

Can you open up about how you funded your business?
When I decided to open my own waxing studio, all I had to myself was my savings and my parents support. Growing up with immigrant parents, and them working hard to give you not just your needs, but your wants makes you want to be able to save your money and provide things for yourself instead on depending on them. Even though I didn’t accept the money from my parents, them just being there every step of the way was more than enough for me. I used all my savings, I luckily had things I’ve purchased throughout the months before I left my last job. I did get second part time job at the hospital, I saved my money. Whatever I would make I will reinvest into my business. It was hard, but 100% worth every penny, tears, and stress, I love my job !
