We recently connected with Alejandra Garcia-ponce and have shared our conversation below.
Alejandra , thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today We’d love to have you retell us the story behind how you came up with the idea for your business, I think our audience would really enjoy hearing the backstory.
The idea for the Latina Social Club DFW came to me last year after a small experiment on the Geneva app led to something bigger than I had anticipated. In 2022, I created The Latina Social Club DFW group on the app, and within a few months, the membership grew to over 100. At first, I was hesitant and got cold feet, unsure if I should take it to Instagram. But by March 2024, I decided to go for it, realizing that there was something special happening.
While I had seen and participated in several networking spaces for Latina professionals in Dallas, I noticed they were often focused on career growth and business opportunities. At the same time, there were plenty of social groups for women in Dallas, but none specifically for Latinas. These spaces were invaluable for professional connections, but I felt something was missing—a space where we could just be. A place where we could connect on a personal level, build real friendships, and form a sense of community beyond the pressures of our careers. It was a gap that needed to be filled.
I began to imagine how incredible it would be for Latinas to come together simply for the joy of socializing—without any agenda. I envisioned a space filled with laughter, shared experiences, and genuine support, where we could celebrate our culture and individuality in a relaxed environment. I wasn’t alone in this desire, and the growing membership on Geneva affirmed that there was a need for this kind of community.
What excited me most was the simplicity of the idea. If I craved this, surely others did too. The more I shared the idea, the more I realized there was a hunger for a space that celebrated our shared culture and experiences, without the constant push toward professional advancement. I knew this was unique in our area, and that uniqueness gave me confidence it would resonate.
There was a mixture of excitement and nervousness as I moved forward, but I knew I was solving a problem no one else had addressed. The Latina Social Club DFW wasn’t just a fun concept—it was a much-needed community where Latinas could feel seen and valued for who they are beyond their resumes. Seeing the club evolve into such a supportive, thriving community has been one of the most rewarding experiences, and I’m so glad I took that leap.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I was born in Mexico and moved to Cleveland when I was five years old. In 2020, I relocated to Dallas-Fort Worth, where I found myself looking for a space where Latinas could truly connect, not just through networking but on a personal, community level. That’s how I ended up founding the **Latina Social Club DFW**. It’s a place where Latinas can gather to support one another and build genuine friendships.
What sets us apart is our commitment to fostering an environment that is all about lifting each other up. We don’t allow tearing women down or gatekeeping. Instead, we champion support—support for the DFW community, for small and large businesses, and particularly for Latin and BIPOC-owned enterprises. Whether you were born in Latin America or raised by Latinx parents, and whether or not you speak Spanish, *you are Latina enough* to be part of this community.
What makes our club special is the emphasis on *in-person connections*. In a world where so much socializing happens online or through apps, where plans often fizzle out after a few texts, we focus on meeting face-to-face and creating lasting bonds. We come together not just to socialize but to celebrate our culture, share our stories, and build something lasting.
For me, as a Latina, I carry the light of my culture in my heart and the strength of my roots in my spirit. This drives everything I do with the Latina Social Club. The club is not just about having a good time; it’s about creating a community where every Latina knows she belongs and is valued. I’m incredibly proud to see this vision come to life and to witness the strong, supportive community we’ve built together.
Any advice for managing a team?
When it comes to managing a team and maintaining high morale, one piece of advice I stand by is the importance of transparency and genuine connection. I honestly cannot imagine the Latina Social Club DFW without the incredible women who help me run our events. These social ambassadors are not just team members; they are amazing humans and friends who share my drive to build this community for Latina women.
Transparency is key in our work. From the beginning, I made it clear that I’m not a “manager” but a team member who values their ideas and contributions. I believe that giving people the liberty to create and design experiences for our events empowers them and makes them feel genuinely invested. This autonomy fosters creativity and builds trust within the group.
We also maintain open and constant communication. We have a dedicated channel where we stay connected, share ideas, and support one another. But beyond that, I look forward to our regular meetings over cafecito. It’s not just about planning—it’s about coming together as friends, which keeps the morale high and the energy positive.
In short, fostering a sense of collaboration, trust, and personal connection is vital. When everyone feels valued and free to bring their ideas to life, the whole team thrives.
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
The journey to building a thriving online community for the Latina Social Club DFW began with a simple yet powerful step: putting myself out there. It wasn’t about grand gestures or massive campaigns; it was about authentic connection.
I started by actively engaging with the Latina community on various social media platforms. Direct messages became my lifeline, allowing me to have personal conversations and understand the needs and interests of my potential members. These one-on-one interactions laid the foundation for trust and a sense of belonging.
Recognizing the power of partnerships, I sought to collaborate with local organizations and businesses. Events became a cornerstone of our growth strategy. By partnering with like-minded entities, we could reach a wider audience and offer our members unique experiences. These collaborations not only expanded our reach but also strengthened our position within the community.
What truly fueled our growth was the incredible support we received from organizations and businesses, both within and outside of the DFW area. The positive response from other Latina social clubs across the United States was particularly heartwarming. This solidarity demonstrated the power of community and the shared experiences of Latinas everywhere.
